An FIR has been registered against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru on Wednesday for insulting Hindu religious sentiments and the Chavundi Daiva tradition of Karnataka. According to NDTV report, this matter is related to the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held in Goa on 28 November 2025. This FIR has been lodged against Ranveer Singh by Bengaluru lawyer Prashant Methal. The complainant alleges that Ranveer Singh made objectionable comments on stage and acted in a way that mocked the sacred elements of the Daiva tradition. The complaint states that Ranveer copied the body language associated with Panjurli and Guliga Daiva and presented them in an obscene, ridiculous and insulting manner. Apart from this, the actor has also been accused of calling Chavundi Daiva a ‘female ghost’. According to the complainant, Chavundi Daiva is revered as the protector goddess in the coastal areas of Karnataka and is a symbol of divine feminine power. Calling them ‘ghosts’ has been said to hurt religious sentiments. Let us tell you, a private complaint was filed by lawyer Prashant Methal before the Additional Judicial Magistrate in Bengaluru on 27 December 2025, after which on 23 January 2026, the court directed the High Grounds Police to register an FIR under Section 175, Subsection 3 of the BNS. Learn about the case in detail? Ranveer Singh became a part of the International Film Festival of India in Goa on 28 November 2025. Ranveer Singh told the film’s director and actor Rishabh Shetty, ‘Rishabh, I saw it (Kantara) in the theatre. That was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost comes into your body. That performance, that one shot, was outstanding. Ranveer Singh further said, ‘Have you seen Kantara? When that shot comes’. Further, Ranveer Singh himself made fun of that character by mimicking it. Ranveer further said, ‘Is there anyone here who wants to see me in Kantara 3, they should tell this man.’ Another video of Ranveer Singh was revealed from the film festival, in which even after coming off the stage, he was seen mimicking Chavundi Devi in front of Rishabh Shetty, although Rishabh Shetty was seen stopping him by continuously pointing. Ranveer Singh has issued an apology and wrote from the official Instagram account – My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s brilliant performance in the film (Kantara). Being an actor, I know how much hard work goes into pulling off that particular scene the way he did and I respect him immensely for that. I have always had deep respect for every culture, tradition and faith of our country. If anything I said has hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologize.
