The UP government has taken a big decision related to people’s health. Expiry date will have to be written on eggs in the state from April 1, 2026. After the implementation of this rule, shopkeepers will no longer be able to sell old or spoiled eggs by calling them fresh eggs. Customers will be able to take decision after seeing the date themselves
.
Why was this rule brought? Investigation by the Animal Husbandry Department and the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) revealed that at many places old or spoiled eggs were being sold as ‘fresh’, which could pose a threat to people’s health. The rules were not being followed.
FSDA Joint Commissioner Harishankar Singh said, this exercise was going on for two years. It was decided to write the batch number first, but this was not practically possible. Because the eggs come from different places, it was not possible to write down the batch number. Therefore, it has been decided that the date should be written on the egg. For this, the laying and expiry dates will be stamped on the eggs.
Bhaskar can give his opinion by taking part in the poll…
Mukesh Meshram, Additional Chief Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department said,
The government has taken this step to protect the health of consumers. This step is very important to increase food transparency.

Egg distributors meeting on March 18 Harishankar Singh said, a meeting of major egg distributors of the state has been called on March 18. In this, there will be discussion with them to understand and implement the government order. This is to be implemented from April 1, we want to understand how it will be implemented and how it will be monitored.

If eggs are stored at room temperature, around 30 degrees Celsius, they are safe to eat within two weeks of the laying date.
What will be printed on the egg?
Laying Date: When did the hen lay the egg i.e. production date. Expiry Date: How long will the egg remain safe i.e. the date of spoilage?
What was the rule now: The production date is written on the egg trays, but not individually stamped on each egg.
What is the punishment for breaking the rules? If any producer, farmer, poultry farm or shopkeeper does not follow this rule, strict action will be taken. Their eggs will be confiscated and destroyed or labeled ‘unfit for human consumption’. Such eggs will not be sold in the market. Everyone will be forced to follow the rules.
How long are eggs safe for? According to Harishankar Singh-
- Eggs remain safe for up to 2 weeks at normal room temperature (about 25 to 35 degrees Celsius).
- If kept at a controlled temperature of 8-12 degrees Celsius, it will remain safe for about 5 weeks.

Bad eggs sold in the market have a bad effect on people’s health. Stomach swelling and dehydration may occur.
Why is separate storage necessary? According to food safety regulations, eggs cannot be stored in the same cold storage with vegetables or other food items. Both require different temperatures and conditions. Proper storage maintains the freshness of eggs for a long time.
Condition of cold storage in UP At present, there are only two special cold storages for eggs in the state. One in Agra and the other in Jhansi. This number is very low for the entire state. Lack of storage remains a big challenge. The government will need to create more cold storage in future so that the new rules can be implemented easily.

Animal Husbandry Department officials say that traders and poultry farmers will have to compulsorily follow this rule.
Consumption of 2.5 crore eggs per day in UP 2.50 crore eggs are consumed daily in the state. At present egg production in the state is around 1.60 crore. More than 90 lakh eggs are procured from states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh etc. Egg consumption increases by 20 to 25 percent in India. The annual per capita consumption of eggs in the country is 106. However, the per capita annual consumption in UP is 30 eggs. If the consumption increases in UP like the national average of 106 eggs per year, then 7 crore eggs will be required here every day.
What kind of harm is caused by eating bad eggs? According to the FSDA, the biggest risk from eating spoiled eggs is food poisoning. This happens especially due to infection with Salmonella bacteria that grow in eggs. Spoiled eggs can also contain other bacteria, such as E. coli, which can cause serious illness. Due to this, severe stomach pain, cramps, vomiting, nausea, fever, headache, fatigue, swelling in the stomach, dehydration can occur. Sometimes bloody diarrhea may also occur. It can also be fatal for children, elderly, pregnant women and diabetic or cancer patients.
