The war between Houthi rebels and the government in Yemen has again intensified. The government has launched a military operation to retake the Houthi-held capital Sanaa. Fighting is taking place in many areas including Taiz, Al-Bayda and Al-Jouf.
On the other hand, Houthis have claimed that they have targeted Saudi Arabia’s Abha Airport, King Khalid Airbase and facilities of oil and gas company Aramco with missiles and drones.
Saudi accused of air attack on prison
On September 7, the Houthis alleged that Saudi Arabia carried out an airstrike on a prison in the city of al-Hazm in al-Jawf province.
Initially it was said that 7 people including a child had died and at least 7 people were injured in the attack.
Later, the head of al-Jawf Civil Defense, Hassan Samboula, raised the death toll to 11. He said 20 prisoners were still missing under the debris. According to Houthi media, the dead included a child who had come to visit someone in prison.
These claims have not been independently verified. Saudi Arabia has also not responded to the allegations of prison attack.
Houthis claim – shot down 4 Saudi surveillance drones
The Houthis claimed to be carrying out missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia after the prison attack allegations. The Houthis said they targeted Abha International Airport, King Khalid Air Base and some Aramco facilities. Apart from this, 4 surveillance drones of Saudi Arabia were also dropped. Information about the damage caused by these attacks has not been revealed yet.
Saudi claims- 73 people injured in Houthi attacks
Meanwhile, the Houthis are accused of targeting civilian and economic targets in Saudi cities. Information has been given that 73 people were injured in these attacks.
The attacks affected Abha, Khamis Mushait, Najran and Jizan. According to the Saudi side, women and children are also among the injured. Saudi Arabia has warned of giving a strong response to these attacks.
Yemeni government said- will now take back Sana
Amid rising tensions, Yemen’s Deputy Defense Minister Major General Samir al-Sabri said that the government has decided to take back Sanaa.
Government-backed forces have launched rockets and airstrikes on Houthi positions. There is heavy fighting going on between the two sides on the ground also.
Majid al-Nujaili, a spokesman for the government-backed army, said the goal was to liberate Yemen from the Houthis and make Sanaa the capital of all Yemenis again.
The government has also warned the general public to avoid going on some major roads leading to Sanaa.
Why did Al-Jouf become an important front?
Yemen’s Al-Jawf is close to the border with Saudi Arabia. This area is connected to important roads leading to Sana’a.
Therefore, gaining ground here could give the government-backed army a strategic advantage in advancing towards the capital.
For this reason, the ongoing battle in Al-Jouf is being considered an important part of the current military operation.
Fighting also intensifies in Taiz and Al-Baida
The fighting between the government and the Houthis is not limited to al-Jouf. Fighting between the two sides has also intensified in Taiz, Al-Bayda and Marib.
Taiz is an important area of western Yemen. There has been a conflict here between the government and the Houthis for a long time.
Al-Bayda is located in the middle of Yemen. It connects many areas of North and South. By controlling these areas, both sides can benefit in the movement of troops and weapons.
The conflict started in 2014
The current conflict in Yemen began in 2014. That year the Houthis captured the capital Sanaa.
Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen in 2015 at the request of President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi. Its objective was to re-strengthen the internationally recognized government by driving back the Houthis. After this, there was a fierce fighting in Yemen for many years.
In 2022, large-scale fighting stopped largely with the mediation of the United Nations, but a permanent political settlement could not be reached.
