On top of that, there is a blind character in the story whose eyes cannot see the world, but his ears, nose and brain work wonders. In front is Akshay Kumar’s character of dreaded Parashuram, who is burning in the fire of revenge. That means on one hand there is a man who cannot be seen and on the other hand there is a man who is not easy to stop. This fight of ‘Haiwan’ is quite interesting on paper and the film also brings this interest on screen at many places. The only problem is that the film takes a little too long to reach its point. How is the story of the film? Shyam Rane is blind since birth. While shouldering the responsibilities of the family, he works in a big building in Mumbai. He has no eyesight, but his ability to understand the world around him through sound, smell and touch is extraordinary. On the other side is Parshuram Gokhale. After coming out of jail, he has anger, old scores and full preparation for revenge. A secret related to a girl comes into Shyam’s life, which puts him directly on the target of Parashuram. This then begins the real cat-and-mouse game, where Shyam has to escape from an enemy he cannot see, and Parashuram has to deal with a man who can hear his every move. The idea of the story is interesting and there is a lot of scope, especially the way Shyam’s senses have been used. But the film takes a little longer to reach there. The story is strong, if the pace had been a little faster the fun would have been doubled. How is the acting of the star cast? Saif Ali Khan looks quite comfortable in the character of Shyam. He did not make the mistake of making the blind character poor. Shyam is calm, responsible and can even be dangerous when needed. Saif’s underplayed acting makes this character believable. This role is different for Akshay Kumar. Parashuram does not have the glow of a hero, but has a strange restlessness and anger. Akshay has played the character with full energy. However, at some places his anger increases so much that instead of creating fear, the scene starts looking a bit over-the-top. The ‘demon’ which should instill fear does not become that scary every time. Sharib Hashmi in the role of a policeman opens a window of laughter amidst the tension of the film and gives a lot of fun at many places. Boman Irani is trustworthy. Asrani’s presence adds warmth to the film. Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar have got limited space despite being good actors. And Mohanlal’s glimpse is a special gift for those who watch ‘Oppam’. How is the direction and technical side? Priyadarshan, famous for comedy, has brought a dark thriller here. His new color looks good. An attempt to create an atmosphere is clearly visible in the film. The biggest drawback of the screenplay is its pace. Some parts seem to stop the story instead of taking it forward. The songs and some long emotional segments break the pace of the thriller. When the film starts the one-on-one game between Shyam and Parashuram, its effect is better. It is also interesting to use Shyam’s ability to hear and smell in the story. The cinematography goes with the mood of the film. Mumbai’s tall buildings, closed streets and night scenes give the necessary darkness to the story. Especially in tense scenes, camera and sound together try to create an atmosphere. The background score is also among the strong parts of the film. At many places, sounds and silence create more tension than music, which is a perfect choice for the story of the film considering Shyam’s character. If there had been a little more strictness on the editing table, the film could have been more tight. How is the music of the film? Pritam’s music supports the mood of the film, but there is no song that keeps playing in the ears even after the film is over. ‘Mere Hero Hain’ fits the emotional parts well and ‘Rangiyara’ adds a bit of lightness. But the real work in this film is more the background score than the songs. Impact of ‘Oppam’: Old story, new twist ‘Haivaan’ is the Hindi adaptation of Priyadarshan’s Malayalam film ‘Oppam’. In the original film, Mohanlal played the character of blind Shyam. Here Saif tries to leave his own mark and is successful to a great extent. The Hindi version has a little more spice of action, emotion, comedy and stardom. This is what makes it different from ‘Oppam’, but sometimes this masala also reduces the intensity of the thriller. Final Verdict: Watch the movie or not? ‘Haivaan’ has an idea, big stars and Priyadarshan’s unique style too. When Saif’s calm Shyam and Akshay’s restless Parashuram come face to face, the real fun in the film begins. The only problem is that the film gives the thrill for which the viewer buys the ticket by making him wait for a while. If you like a little spice, emotion and comedy in a dark thriller then ‘Haivaan’ will not disappoint you. But if the expectation is that the film will keep a tight grip on the seat from beginning to end, then the matter gets a little loose. Overall, ‘Havaan’ definitely has biting teeth, just the attack comes a little late.
