Making dark comedy is not easy. It requires crime, comedy and also the madness of the characters. Netflix’s new film Maa Behan tries to serve these three things together, but till the end it is unable to decide whether it wants to be a comedy, thriller or family drama. The result is a film with a lot of noise, but very little impact. The story of the film revolves around Rekha (Madhuri Dixit’s character) and her two daughters. One day a dead body is found in the kitchen of their house and from here begins the process of lies, concealment and avoidance. The three women try to hide this secret amid the prying eyes of the neighbours, the conflict within the family and the ever-increasing troubles. This setup sounds interesting, but the problem is that the film doesn’t quite deliver what it promises in the first half hour. Acting in the film, Madhuri Dixit appears to be the most honest in the entire film. She tries to handle many weak scenes from her experience, but weak writing ties her hands. Trupti Dimri has some good moments, but her character remains the same. Ravi Kishan makes his presence felt, but he too does not get any scene that can be remembered for a long time. The biggest problem is that the actors seem to be working hard, but the characters are incompletely written on paper. Even before the audience can connect with them, the story starts rushing to the next turn. The film was directed by Suresh Triveni who had earlier given a sensitive film like Tumhari Sulu, hence the expectations were high. Here his direction seems to be a victim of confusion in many places. The film wants to be a dark comedy, but many scenes seem so artificial that neither laughter nor tension is felt. The biggest drawback is the screenplay. Many incidents happen just because the story needs to move forward. The characters’ decisions don’t seem natural. The film also has an element of mystery, but its revelations are not as impactful as they should have been. Technically the film is fine. The camera work and production design capture the small-town atmosphere of the story, but the editing frequently breaks the rhythm. Many scenes feel longer than necessary and many important moments feel incomplete. Music in the film: The music of the film is not something that will be remembered after coming out of the theater or OTT. The background score tries to create an atmosphere at some places, but due to the weak grip of the story, its impact remains limited. Final Verdict on the film: Maa Behen is an average film based on a brilliant idea. Its setup of zombies, lies and a strange family was interesting, but weak writing, unstable tone and incomplete comedy keep it from being special. Madhuri Dixit and Trupti Dimri try their best, but when the story keeps derailing again and again, even the actors can’t do much. If you want to watch it just for the star cast, then give it a try, but if you expect a strong dark comedy, you will be disappointed.
