There is always an expectation from Anurag Kashyap’s films that they will not ask easy questions. Monkey also raises a topic on which debate can go on for a long time. A serious allegation against a rising actor and singer, the world inside the court and jail of social media. This all sounds very interesting. But the problem starts when the film gets stuck in showing the suffering of only one side instead of understanding a complex subject. The result is that the film is less thought-provoking and more tiring. The story of the film is written by Samar Mehra. He was once a big star, but now his shine has faded. At a wedding, people are more interested in taking pictures of themselves rather than taking pictures with her. This scene becomes the most accurate introduction to his declining stardom. Meanwhile, a woman makes serious allegations against him and his life changes completely. Samar tries to prove himself innocent amidst police custody, court, media trial and inhuman incidents happening inside the jail. The problem is that the more complex the subject of the film is, the more straightforward and convenient its presentation seems. The story repeatedly tells you how much is wrong with Samar, but makes almost no effort to understand the other side. Because of this the film gradually loses balance. If there is any biggest reason to watch Monkey acting in the film, then it is Bobby Deol. After his villainous image in recent years, he looks completely different here. He has shown the broken confidence, pain of humiliation and inner restlessness very effectively. In many scenes, Bobby leaves an impact even without speaking much dialogue. This can be called one of his best recent productions. Indrajith Sukumaran makes an impact even in limited time. His character inside the prison brings some energy to the film. Sapna Pabbi and the other actors do their parts well, but the script doesn’t give them much depth. Anurag Kashyap’s direction and technical aspects in the film are impressive at many places. The prison scenes are disturbing and also make one realize the cruelty of the system. The camera work looks realistic and many scenes have a documentary-like feel to them. But this is where the biggest weakness of the film also comes to light. The director raises big questions, but keeps their answers very simple and one-sided. The lack of balance in the script is clearly visible. The second half feels longer than it needs to be. Many scenes repeat the same thing over and over again. Had a little more work been done on editing and tension, the film could have been more effective. At some places, the film seems to be imposing its own conclusions instead of giving the audience a chance to decide for themselves. This is the reason that instead of forming an emotional bond, distance begins to arise. Music in the film: The music of the film is average. Some songs support the mood of the story, but nothing that sticks in your mind after the movie is over. The background music creates impact at times, but sometimes feels heavier than necessary. Film Final Verdict Bandar is a film based on a strong subject, but a strong subject does not always make a strong film. Bobby Deol’s brilliant acting, some effective scenes and Anurag Kashyap’s choice of a bold subject are its strengths. But weak script, unbalanced approach and excessively stretched story reduce its impact. This film definitely makes you restless, but does not make you think as much as it should have. If you are a fan of Bobby Deol then you can watch the film to see his performance, but if you expect a deep and balanced story then you may come back disappointed.
