Regarding trade with India, US President Donald Trump said that for a long time India imposed high tariffs on America and took advantage of it. Trump claimed that now the situation has changed and America is earning well from India.
Trump further said that there may soon be a big trade agreement between America and India because I like Modi very much. Modi is my very good friend. Our relations are good and we understand each other well.
This statement of Trump has come at a time when a US team has recently held several rounds of talks with Indian government officials in New Delhi. Both countries are trying to agree on a temporary trade agreement, so that some trade related issues can be resolved quickly.
India’s Commerce Ministry says the talks have been positive and both countries want to reach an agreement that benefits both India and the US. That means both sides are still working together to take the trade agreement forward.
America is preparing to impose additional charges
A new difficulty has also arisen amid negotiations regarding agreements. America has proposed to impose additional import duties (tariffs) on some countries. America says that these countries are not taking adequate steps to stop cases related to forced labor.
India’s name is also included in this proposed list. If this decision is implemented, 12.5% additional duty may be imposed on Indian goods going to America. Due to this, Indian products may become expensive in the American market and exporters may be affected.
The Government of India says that no final decision has been taken yet regarding this additional fee. America will first take the opinion of the people and concerned parties on this proposal, and only then will take the final decision.
India-America trade deal blueprint ready
An interim trade agreement was agreed between India and America in February 2026. Its purpose was to resolve long pending trade issues.
However, the Supreme Court ruled some of Trump’s tariffs illegal. After this it was not clear which tariffs would remain applicable and which would not. This affected the US-India trade agreement. Till now the interim trade agreement has not been finalized.
What are the difficulties in India-US trade deal?
India wants the US to reduce additional tariffs imposed on Indian textiles, gems-and-jewellery, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products. At the same time, America wants India to open its market more to American agricultural products, dairy goods, liquor, medical equipment and digital companies.
The biggest controversy is regarding the agricultural sector. America wants its corn, soybean, almonds, apples and other agricultural products to get more access to India. But India fears that this may affect crores of farmers of India.
The dairy sector is also a major hurdle. America wants to sell milk and products made from non-vegetarian cows in India, but India is not ready for it.
