The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) papers were taken out from a printing press in Agra by hiding them in the sole of a shoe. This has been revealed in the nearly 3,500-page charge sheet of Thane Police. In exchange for taking out the paper, the accused were given ₹ 8 thousand. Besides, he was also promised a plot of land in Agra. Thane Police filed a charge sheet in the local court of Bhiwandi on Friday. In this, 18 people including mastermind Bijendra Gupta have been made accused. Gupta’s name had earlier also surfaced in a paper leak case in Odisha. 16 accused have been arrested, while Ashok Sao and Prakash Misal are absconding. The paper was leaked a day before the TET exam to be held on June 28. After this, Maharashtra State Examination Council (MSEC) had postponed the examination. Papers were leaked from Agra’s Mahim Patran Private Limited Printing Press. DCP Pawan Bansod had received information that 3 people were trying to sell exam papers to a person from Bhiwandi. After this the police caught the accused in Kongaon area. Four sets of papers were found from them. During investigation, Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE) officials found them to be genuine. According to the charge sheet, the papers were leaked from Maheem Patran Private Limited Printing Press of Agra. Confidential papers of TET exam were being printed in this press. Between June 15 and 17, two employees of the press and a former employee folded the pages of the paper and hid them in the soles of shoes. In the press, the security guards used to search the clothes, but did not check the shoes. The accused took advantage of this and took out the papers. To prevent cheating in the exam, 4 different sets of 2 papers of TET were prepared. One of these sets was to be used on the day of examination. The accused had taken out all four sets from the printing press. What is TET Exam Teacher Eligibility Test i.e. TET is a national level eligibility test, which decides whether a candidate is eligible to become a teacher in primary and upper primary classes (classes 1 to 8). This examination was made mandatory by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in 2010. Center conducts Central TET and States conduct State TET. NCTE gave 5 years time to the candidates appointed to teacher posts to qualify TET, which was later increased to 4 years. The candidates moved the court against the NCTE notice. The Madras HC bench said in June 2025 that teachers who were appointed before July 29, 2011, are not obliged to pass TET to continue in service, but passing TET will remain mandatory for promotion. Later this matter reached the Supreme Court from different states. September 2, 2025: Supreme Court order – Teachers must pass TET. The Supreme Court had said on September 2 last year that it is necessary for teachers to pass TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) to remain in service or for promotion. The bench of Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice Manmohan had said that all teachers who have more than 5 years left in their jobs will be within the scope of this rule. The court extended the deadline for passing TET from 31 August 2027 to 31 August 2028. Those who do not pass TET will either have to resign or take compulsory retirement.
