National award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar died on Saturday night due to cardiac arrest at the age of 56. He was admitted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi (Kerala) after falling unwell, where he breathed his last. His mortal remains were kept for last darshan at Paravur Town Hall on Sunday. The last rites will be performed at his residence in North Paravur, Ernakulam at 3 pm. The Kerala government expressed grief over his demise. The government decided to bear the last rites and all expenses related to it. Salim Kumar, who worked in more than 300 films, was a famous actor of Malayalam cinema. He worked in more than 300 films in a career spanning over three decades. He mainly acted in Malayalam films. Also appeared in some Tamil (Maryan) and Odia (Unga) films. He started his career with comic roles and became known for his comic timing, expressions and dialogue delivery. Later he established himself as a character actor. Salim Kumar also received the Kerala State Film Award. In 2010, he received the National Film Award and the Best Actor Award at the Keralam State Film Award for his role of Abu in ‘Aadaminte Makan Abu’. Apart from this, he also received the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for ‘Achanurangatha Veedu’ (2005), Best Comedian for ‘Ayalum Njanum Thammil’ (2013) and Best Story for ‘Karutha Joothan’ (2017). Salim Kumar is survived by his wife Sunita, two sons Chandu Salim Kumar and Aromal Salim Kumar. Chandu Salim Kumar is also an actor. Chandu appeared in the superhit film Manjummel Boys (2024). Salim Kumar had also worked as a dubbing artist. He lent his voice as a narrator in the film ‘Om Shanti Oshana’. Whereas, in ‘Utopiayile Rajavu’ he gave voice to the character of a crow. He dubbed for the character of a wooden cupboard in the film ‘Almara’. Apart from this, he played the role of narrator in ‘Keshu E Veedinte Nadhan’. At the same time, in ‘Mukundan Unni Associates’ he gave the voice of the grandfather of the main character Mukundan.
