The Supreme Court on Friday said that it will give its verdict on November 25 on the petitions demanding removal of the words secular and socialist from the Preamble of the Constitution. While hearing the petitions, the bench of CJI Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said that being a socialist in the Indian context means being a welfare country.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, Advocate Balram Singh, Karunesh Kumar Shukla and Ashwini Upadhyay have filed. During the hearing, the bench said that secularism is a part of the basic structure of the Constitution and the Supreme Court has thoroughly examined the 42nd Amendment. In fact, under the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in 1976 during the Indira Gandhi government, the words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ were included in the Preamble of the Constitution.
