It was India’s compulsion to provide shelter to former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina. India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said this in the Bay of Bengal Conversation program on Saturday.

A student asked Trivedi when will Sheikh Hasina, who killed our people, be brought back to our country?

In response, Trivedi said that the legal process is going on. The time frame for when Hasina will be sent to Bangladesh cannot be told.

After leaving power, she came to India on 5 August 2024. Hasina has been living in India for the last two years.

If India had not allowed Hasina to come, the situation could have worsened.

Trivedi also responded to Hasina’s decision to allow her to come to India. He said that when Hasina left Dhaka on August 5, 2024, she was still the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the situation there was changing rapidly.

Trivedi said that at that time India had no option but to allow Hasina to land in Delhi. If India had not allowed them to land, the situation could have worsened.

Trivedi also clarified that Hasina was not brought to India by the Indian Air Force or the Indian Army. He was brought to India by Bangladesh Air Force aircraft.

After violent protests on 5 August 2024, Sheikh Hasina came to Delhi by helicopter.

Hasina said- I will return in December

Hasina had said on 5 August 2026 that she would return to Bangladesh by December. In an interview with CNN, he said he was ready to face legal action, but he wanted protection, access to a lawyer, the right to defend himself, an independent judiciary and a fair trial.

He had denied any backchannel talks with BNP and said that India was still their friend.

Bangladesh has been demanding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina for a long time.

Rahman’s government has demanded extradition several times

Tariq Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party government came to power after the elections on 12 February. Hasina’s party Awami League was not allowed to participate in these elections. The new government has repeated the demand for Hasina’s extradition several times.

The issue of sending back Hasina remains a major cause of tension in India-Bangladesh relations. This has also affected Tariq Rehman’s tour to India.

India had invited Tariq Rehman to attend the BRICS summit held last month. Apart from this, he was separately invited by India to visit India since February. But after becoming Prime Minister he did not visit India even once.

There is an extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh

India and Bangladesh signed an extradition treaty in 2013. It has provisions for refusing to extradite a person to another country under certain circumstances. These also include cases related to crimes of political nature.

Hasina faces serious allegations related to the violence and deaths during the 2024 movement in Bangladesh. The current government of Bangladesh wants to bring them back and take legal action.

The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh had sentenced Hasina and her then Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in November 2025. On 15 September 2026, some former associates of Hasina government were also sentenced.

According to an investigation by the United Nations Human Rights Office, about 1,400 people were killed during the July-August 2024 movement.
