India has set a new record in the field of Basmati export. In just five months from April to August this year, the country exported 2.7 million tonnes of Basmati rice, which is four lakh tonnes more than last year.

While Pakistan exports only one million tonnes of Basmati, India is exporting more than six million tonnes. This time exporters have set a target of 6.5 million tonnes.
Talking about the production and export of Basmati worldwide, it is limited to only two countries – India and Pakistan. But in terms of export volume, India has overtaken Pakistan six times. Pakistan exports only one million tonnes of Basmati rice every year, whereas India exports up to 6 million tonnes. Now the target has been set to reach 6.5 million tonnes in this financial year 2025-26.

An increase of 4 lakh tonnes recorded in five months
According to Satish Goyal, President of All India Rice Export Association, 2.7 million tonnes of Basmati rice was exported from April 1 to August 30, 2025, while 2.3 million tonnes were exported in the same period last year. That means an increase of four lakh tonnes was recorded in just five months. This is a major achievement for India’s Basmati industry.

Export record was broken last year
In the year 2024-25, India made a historic record in the field of Basmati export. In that financial year, 6 million tonnes of Basmati were exported, whereas in the previous year i.e. 2023-24, this figure was only 5 million tonnes. That means an increase of one million tonnes was recorded in a single year. According to industry experts, this surge in exports has happened due to government policies and continuous increase in international demand.

Despite increasing tariffs in America, export levels will remain the same
Despite the increase in tariff in America, there has been no decline in the demand for Indian Basmati. Last year, even when tariff was not applicable, India had exported 2 lakh 70 thousand tonnes. Now, despite the imposition of tariff, rice exporters are hopeful that this year also the same quantity i.e. 2 lakh 70 million tonnes of Basmati will be sent to America.
Fragrance of Indian Basmati reached 170 countries
According to Satish Goyal, India’s Basmati is now being exported to 170 countries. Among these, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq are the major countries. About 1 million tons of Basmati rice is sent every year to Saudi Arabia alone, while Iran and Iraq together export 2 million tons. A total of 3 million tonnes of rice is delivered to these three countries, which is almost half of India’s total exports.

Export capacity increased due to government policies
The credit for this increase in Basmati export is being given to the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to rice exporters, India has strengthened its reputation in the international market due to the favorable policies of the central government, stable foreign trade policy and focus on quality control. This is the reason why today India has emerged as the largest exporter of Basmati among 170 countries.

Target set for 6.5 million tonnes next year
India has set a target to export 6.5 million tonnes of Basmati in 2025-26. Rice exporters are confident that given the current pace this target will not be difficult to achieve. Basmati industry is continuously getting a boost due to increasing global demand, improvement in quality and policy stability of the government.
