Brazilian President Lula da Silva may lose the election. Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has overtaken him in voting.
No candidate got more than 50% of the votes, so now the second round of voting will be held in Brazil on October 25.
Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to about 27 years in prison for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 elections.
Lula got 2% less votes than Flavio
In Brazil, the general public votes directly for the President. To become President, any candidate must get more than 50% votes. In the first round, Flavio Bolsonaro got about 47% of the votes, while Lula got about 45% of the votes.
Most of the surveys before the elections were showing Lula in the lead, but the results changed the picture.

Flavio has been active in politics since 2002
45-year-old Flavio Bolsonaro is the elder son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. He is a senator from Rio de Janeiro and has been active in politics since 2002. Before coming into politics, he was a lawyer and businessman.
He is contesting the 2026 presidential election as the face of the Bolsonaro family. His father Jair Bolsonaro cannot run in elections due to a prison sentence, so supporters consider Flavio his political successor.

Flavio Bolsonaro’s father is close to Trump
Flavio’s father Jair Bolsonaro is called the ‘Trump of Brazil’. This is because there are many similarities in the politics of both the leaders. Both talk about nationalism, strict law and order and traditional social values.
Both have gained huge popularity through social media. First Trump in 2020 and then Jair Bolsonaro in 2022 had raised questions on the election results.
After losing the 2022 presidential election, Jair Bolsonaro was accused of conspiring to remain in power. The Brazilian Supreme Court had found him guilty in a case related to undermining the democratic system and attempting a coup.

80 year old Lula trying to become president for the fourth time
80-year-old Lula is trying to become president for the fourth time. He made his social welfare and work for the poor a major issue in the election campaign.
However, the government has faced criticism on issues like inflation, rising prices of everyday items and crime. Analysts believe that this is the reason why this time the competition became tougher than expected.

Bolsonaro camp strengthened in Parliament also
The performance of right-wing parties was strong in the parliamentary elections held along with the presidential elections. Flavio’s Liberal Party is emerging as the largest force in the lower house.
Michelle Bolsonaro, wife of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has reached the Senate. His son Carlos Bolsonaro has also won. It is clear from this that despite Jair Bolsonaro being out of electoral politics, his political influence remains intact.

America and China keep an eye on the elections in Brazil
Brazil is the largest economy in Latin America. Also a founding member of BRICS. Therefore the world is keeping an eye on this election.
If Lula wins, existing partnerships with China and the BRICS countries are likely to continue. Flavio Bolsonaro is considered close to US President Donald Trump. In case of his victory, relations with America may become stronger.
