The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has drastically reduced the prices of the India-Uruguay friendly on Tuesday, with some sections at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium seeing a cut of as much as 90%.

This comes after the body was left red-faced over the empty stands in the highly anticipated game between India and Brazil on Saturday. Tickets for the Brazil friendly ranged from Rs 999 to Rs 15,000, leading to an official attendance of 51,402 spectators in the 85,000-capacity stadium.

India’s loyal football fanbase complained that the tickets were too expensive, compared to the usual prices seen in the Indian Super League (ISL). AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey had refused to answer questions about it. Now, tickets for the C2 Left and C2 Right blocks have been reduced from Rs 1,999 to Rs 199 for the match against Uruguay, but its impact, with just a few hours before the match, remains to be seen.

The West Bengal government has also announced complimentary tickets for about 22,000 people who missed seeing Lionel Messi at his G.O.A.T India Tour event at the stadium last year. The event was cut short and descended into chaos due to severe overcrowding, security breaches, and VIP mismanagement

“I want to convey this through the media to the people who missed out on the Messi event, some 22,000 of them. We (the West Bengal Government) will announce a WhatsApp number through which they can collect their free tickets for the Uruguay match,” Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said.

India lost 0-4 to Brazil but put up quite a decent fight in the match, with the midfielders offering good buildup solutions and the defenders growing in the game, physically. The attack led by Ryan Williams offered a few good moments in the second half, too, but it did not materialise into much.
