NASA released video of a volcano erupting from Jupiter’s moon Io.

American space agency NASA has released a video of the volcanic eruption on IO, the third largest moon of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. This video has been recorded by NASA from the spacecraft of its Juno mission. The video has been posted by the space agency on social media.

In this video, lava is seen coming out from the surface of the moon IO. IO is considered to be the most active volcanic moon in our solar system. There are more than 400 active volcanoes on its surface, in which eruptions occur continuously and lava comes out.

Research by NASA’s Juno mission has helped in understanding the 44-year-old mystery of volcanic activity on IO. The first photo of a volcanic eruption on Io was taken in 1979. There are many ponds here in which molten lava is present.

How powerful is Io?

The volcanic lava that erupts on Jupiter’s moon IO comes from magma chambers rather than oceans of magma. According to Nature.com, its shape keeps changing due to the volcanoes erupting on its surface.

IO was first discovered by scientist Galileo Galilei in 1610. However, the volcano was discovered to be active in 1979 by scientist Linda A. Morabito had imposed it.

Scott Bolton, chief researcher of the Juno mission, said that since the discovery of Linda, scientists were curious about how lava is coming out of the surface of IO.

How was the IO inspected?

NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft took the first photo of Io’s erupting volcanic lava in 1979. Io, which is considered to be the same size as Earth’s Moon, continues to shrink. When a volcano erupts, intense heat is generated within the moon Io. This causes the interior of Io to melt, causing an explosion.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft in late 2023 and early 2024 used Doppler measurements to collect precise gravity data.

This suggests that the heat generated by Io’s lava eruptions may be important for melting Io’s rock interior.
