More than 500 people fleeing violence in Myanmar are feared missing at sea. Two boats disappeared in bad weather off the coast of Myanmar, according to two UN agencies. Most of the people on board belonged to the Rohingya community. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said in a joint statement that the two boats had left Myanmar’s western Rakhine state in late June. There were about 250 people in the first boat. Contact with him was lost shortly after departure. The second boat, carrying about 280 passengers, is believed to have sunk near Ayeyarwady coast of Myanmar on July 8. Rohingya people do not have citizenship of any country. Rohingya are a Muslim minority community of Rakhine State of Myanmar. This community has been facing government oppression, violence and discrimination for decades. Myanmar’s Buddhist majority government and the local people there do not consider the Rohingyas to be the original inhabitants of Myanmar. They claim that these people are illegal immigrants who came from Bangladesh (erstwhile Bengal) during the British rule. They are officially called ‘Bengali’. The Rohingya community says that they have been living in the Rakhine region since the eighth century or earlier and that they are the original inhabitants there. In the year 1982, Rohingyas were refused citizenship. Due to this he became a citizen of no country. They do not have basic rights like education, health, travel and even freedom to marry. About 12 lakh Rohingya are currently living in refugee camps in Bangladesh. These people had reached there escaping the violence of the Myanmar army. Food rations in these camps have also been reduced due to cuts in foreign aid by the US and other countries in recent years. Rohingya refugees have no way to return safely to Myanmar. In 2017, Myanmar’s army was accused of large-scale violence against the Rohingya community, which many countries considered genocide. The Rohingyas who are still living in Myanmar are facing strict restrictions. Many of these people are forced to live in detention camps. The Rohingya, who are taking deadly risks to reach Malaysia, generally avoid traveling by sea during this season, as the sea becomes extremely dangerous during the monsoon. However, due to violence in Myanmar and poor conditions in the crowded refugee camps of Bangladesh, people of the Rohingya community have been trying to reach countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand in dilapidated wooden boats for years. Due to poor conditions, a large number of Rohingya people try to reach Malaysia on dilapidated boats. Thousands of people have lost their lives during this period, including newborn babies, children and pregnant women. The United Nations says that sometimes local maritime agencies do not even help boats in trouble. Nearly 900 Rohingya refugees could be killed or go missing in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal by 2025, according to the United Nations, one of the world’s most dangerous sea routes. It is considered the most dangerous sea route for refugees and migrants in the world. IOM and UNHCR said this possible incident shows that no permanent solution has yet been found to the Rohingya crisis. He appealed to the international community to increase assistance to the people living in refugee camps in Bangladesh. The agencies said strengthening search and rescue operations, improving asylum systems and taking tough action against human trafficking networks is necessary to prevent further deaths on one of the world’s most dangerous sea routes. According to UNHCR, more than 6,500 Rohingya were trying to flee by sea in 2025. Of these, about 900 people were killed or went missing. It was the deadliest year ever for Rohingya refugees and recorded the highest death toll on any major refugee sea route in the world. How many Rohingya are there in India? Note: The figures of the Government of India and UNHCR differ regarding the number of Rohingyas. The UNHCR reports only the number of refugees and asylum seekers registered with it, while the Indian government’s estimate is based on the total Rohingya population in the country.
