How many cars will be there in the Prime Minister’s convoy, in which formation it will run, it is decided through SPG protocol and the entire convoy runs under the guidelines of the Home Ministry. How many vehicles are there?

The number of vehicles in the PM convoy is not fixed. This number is decided on the basis of location, threat assessment and circumstances there. For example, if the PM is doing a road show then the convoy may be separate and if he is going from his residence in Delhi to Parliament then the convoy may be separate. According to India Today report, the Prime Minister’s convoy usually includes 13 to 17 vehicles. This number keeps changing.

This convoy consists of high-end security cars like bulletproof Range Rover etc. in which the PM travels. Apart from this, jammer equipped Toyota Fortuner, communication vehicle, ambulance and support van are included. Besides, there are route clearance vehicles which are looked after by SDM, DCP etc. This security protocol is everywhere. All these vehicles are black in colour. Apart from this, there are many cars in the PM convoy.

What is the convoy like?

Every vehicle of the PM convoy runs under a fixed protocol. TOI quoted a security officer as saying that it starts with a pilot vehicle, which is driven by an ACP rank officer of Delhi or the concerned state police. After this, there is another security car, which is attached to the security wing of the police.

Next are the police vehicles, which vary from state to state. After this there is the PM Box, which contains some vehicles including the Prime Minister’s car, which are usually black in color. In this part, along with the PM, there are SPG commandos, staff and necessary security personnel.

PM Convoy

After this, a route inspection vehicle moves, which has an inspector of Delhi Police who monitors the route ahead. Then another security vehicle supports the convoy. Last of all runs the tail car, which consists of traffic police officers, who take the ultimate responsibility of security and coordination of the entire convoy.
