The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on Saturday (July 6) successfully tested the indigenous light tank ‘Joravaar’ in Surat, Gujarat. DRDO has developed it in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
DRDO chief Sameer V Kamath was present during the testing of Zoravar at L&T’s plant in Hazira, Surat. He said that after all the testing, the tank is expected to be inducted into the Indian Army by the year 2027.
Initially, 59 tanks will be given to the army. There is a plan to take their number to 295. The light weight Zorawar tank will be deployed in high altitude areas like Ladakh. Taking lessons from the Russia and Ukraine war, loitering munition USV has been added to the tank.
It is believed that Zorawar has been designed to counter China’s light weight tank ZTQ Type-15. China has deployed ZTQ Type-15 tanks after the clash with the Indian Army in the Galwan Valley. The Indian Army has deployed 200 T-72 tanks. However, these tanks are heavier than Zorawar.

DRDO chief said- Zoravar was prepared in record time
DRDO Chief Kamath said that it is indeed an important day for all of us to see the light tank in action. We have set an example. In less than two and a half years, we have not only designed a 25-tonne light tank but also built its first prototype and tested it.
He further said that now the first prototype will undergo development testing in the next 6 months. After this we will be ready to present it to the army. Zorawar is expected to be inducted into the Indian Army by the year 2027 after all the tests.
At the same time, L&T Executive Vice President Arun Ramchandani said that today is a big day for L&T. Within two years, we have brought the tank to a level where it can be taken for internal testing and very soon for user testing.
He said that this is a joint effort of DRDO and L&T. This is a big achievement for both the teams. No new product has been deployed in such a short time anywhere in the world.

There are three types of tanks, each has a different role – DRDO Tank Lab Director
Rajesh Kumar, director of DRDO Tank Lab, said that there are generally three different types of tanks. There are three categories based on weight. Heavy tanks, medium tanks and light tanks.
Kumar further said that every tank has its own role. One is for defense, one is for attack and these light tanks play a mixed role for both. That is why many players (countries) in the world are making light tanks, which include Western tanks, Russian tanks, Chinese tanks.
He further said that the unique thing about Zoravar is its weight which is 25 tonnes. Also, Zoravar fulfills the basics of a tank. It has power, speed and safety. All these parameters are being met in Zoravar.
All tests are expected to be completed in the next 12-18 months
It is expected that all the tests related to Zorawar will be completed within the next 12-18 months. After being handed over to the army, these 25-tonne tanks will be transported to the deployment sites through the Indian Air Force’s C-17 Globemaster. 2 tanks can be transported at a time.
Being light, Zorawar can move very fast in hilly areas. Currently, T-72, T-90 tanks are deployed in hilly areas, which will be replaced by Zorawar.
