The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in West Bengal on Thursday arrested Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas. Biswas has been the former in-charge of Kalighat police station. They were accused of being involved in an organized extortion and land-grabbing racket. His arrest came when he finally appeared before the investigating agency after several summons.
According to sources, during interrogation on Thursday, Biswas was not giving direct answers to the questions of the investigating officers. The officer said that they were hiding important facts and were not cooperating in the investigation.
Last month, ED had raided Biswas’s residence, from where several ‘objectionable’ documents were recovered. He was being interrogated on the basis of these documents.
Lookout notice and security cordon
Shantanu Biswas was continuously ignoring the ED summons. He was also called on 28th April i.e. just before the second phase of Bengal elections, but he did not appear.
Investigating officers claim that when they were trying to abscond, the ED issued a ‘lookout circular’ against them. This notice was sent to all airports and BSF posts so that they could not flee the country. On Wednesday, the agency had also written a letter to the Security Directorate seeking information about his whereabouts.
ED investigation has revealed that Biswas had relations with notorious criminal of Golpark ‘Sona Pappu’ and MD of ‘Sun Enterprises’ Joy Kamdar.
It is alleged that Biswas, misusing his police position, ran an extortion and land grabbing racket with the help of these criminals. After the arrest of Behala businessman Joy Kamdar, strong evidence was found against Biswas during the interrogation.
