On the occasion of International Yoga Day, more than 12 thousand people did yoga on Saturday in Times Square in the American city of New York. People from different countries and communities gathered to do yoga at this place, which is counted among the busiest intersections in the world. The main attraction of this year’s International Yoga Day celebrations was Yoga Guru Dr. H.R. Nagendra remained. Dr. Nagendra, President of Bengaluru-based S-Vyasa University, is also known as the yoga guru of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that this year the theme of Yoga Day is ‘Yoga for healthy and long life’. According to the organizers, this time more than 12 thousand people registered for the program. The participants said that doing yoga in a crowded place like Times Square is a unique experience and it makes people feel peaceful. The United Nations had declared June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014 on the proposal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since then, Yoga Day is celebrated on a large scale every year in many countries of the world. A special meditation session was organized under the leadership of Nagendra. Yoga guru Nagendra said that many changes occur in the body with increasing age, but with the help of yoga and special pranayam, a person can remain healthy for a long time. He said that Yoga is an ancient science, which shows the way to understand not only the body but also the mind, soul, devotion and intellect. Consul General said – The popularity of yoga is increasing in America. Consul General of India Binay Pradhan said that the popularity of yoga is continuously increasing in America, the proof of which is the increasing participation in yoga centers and programs. President of North America Rajasthan Association, Prem Bhandari also thanked the Prime Minister of India for starting International Yoga Day. He said that on the initiative of Prime Minister Modi, the United Nations had declared June 21 as International Yoga Day and today it is celebrated in more than 190 countries. Prem Bhandari has also been organizing yoga programs at prestigious places like the United Nations Headquarters and the US Parliament complex Capitol Hill for the last decade. Yoga started with 3 people, reached 12 thousand. The yoga program in Times Square started on June 21, 2003 with only three people. Later this event gradually became one of the largest public yoga events in the world. Today seven free yoga sessions are organized here throughout the day. One participant said that doing yoga in Times Square is a magical experience, where people from different countries and cultures come together to spread the message of positive energy. Another participant said that doing yoga in one of the busiest places in the world makes one realize that peace and calm can be achieved even amidst the hustle and bustle. The event was held in collaboration with the Indian Consulate and North America Rajasthan Association (RANA). It was attended by diplomats from various countries, academicians, industry representatives, yoga institutes, spiritual organizations and people from the Indian-American community. Representatives of many countries including diplomats from UAE, Serbia, Nepal, Romania and Malaysia were also present in the program. According to the organisers, such programs help in strengthening cultural ties between the countries through yoga and meditation.
