On Thursday, on the instructions of LG VK Saxena, the MCD Commissioner had submitted the report.
Elections will be held for the last vacant seat of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday at 1 pm. Although this election was to be held on Thursday itself, but after the political drama that lasted till late night, LG VK Saxena had asked Corporation Commissioner Ashwini Kumar to submit the report by 10 pm.
The Commissioner issued new instructions for conducting elections at night itself. Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi had adjourned the House till October 5 after the uproar that started due to checking of councilors. But LG reversed his decision.
These elections are to be held to fill the only vacant seat in the 18-member Standing Committee, the highest decision-making body of the MCD. This seat became vacant after BJP leader Kamaljit Sehrawat was elected MP from West Delhi.
Former Deputy CM of Delhi and AAP leader Manish Sisodia expressed displeasure on this instruction of LG. He said that BJP is killing democracy in Delhi Municipal Corporation. Democracy is being murdered in the Standing Committee elections.
The LG’s instructions were that if the Mayor refuses to conduct elections, then the Deputy Mayor should be made the presiding officer of the elections. If the Deputy Mayor also refuses then the senior most member of the House will preside over the election.
There was an uproar after the search of councilors Actually, elections were to be held for the sixth seat of the Standing Committee on Thursday. When the councilor reached MCD, he was searched. After this there was an uproar. The councilors were checked to ensure that no one was carrying a mobile phone.
When MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi entered the House, she had expressed concern over the security check of councilors. He had claimed that this is happening for the first time in the history of MCD.
The way the public search is being conducted is undemocratic and insulting to the councillors. I am adjourning the House for 15 minutes and order the MCD Commissioner to allow the councilors to enter without any checking.
The Mayor had adjourned the House for October 5. The mayor had said that she wanted elections to be held, but the atmosphere was spoiled due to the searches. This will be remembered in history, the way pressure was put on the officials and they did not follow my orders, I am adjourning the House till 2 pm on 5th October.
After saying this the Mayor left the House. During this, BJP councilors had raised slogans of ‘Mayor come to his senses and get the standing committee elected.
Sisodia said- BJP councilors already knew everything Manish Sisodia said in the press conference on Thursday night – We were wondering what is the objective of BJP, then we understood what is the real game. A Municipal Corporation employee told us that the councilors of AAP and Congress have left the House. Whereas BJP kept its councilors sitting near the Commissioner in the MCD House along with its Chairman and MPs.
All the BJP councilors are sitting there right now. He already knew that the LG of Delhi would write a letter and the Commissioner’s order would come by 10 pm. They already knew everything so everyone is stuck there. BJP is conspiring. The Mayor had postponed the Standing Committee elections till October 5, but the Lieutenant Governor has ordered the Standing Committee elections tonight itself. Is there any trouble that elections have been ordered at night?
BJP said- Anti-incumbency wave against Arvind Kejriwal is at its peak BJP Delhi President Virendra Sachdeva had said in a statement on Thursday that the BJP has asked the MCD Commissioner to conduct the elections as per the law and the directions of the Supreme Court.
He had alleged that the anti-incumbency wave against Arvind Kejriwal is at its peak and AAP is running away from the elections because it fears that its councilors will leave it. BJP will file a contempt petition against the mayor in the court on Friday.
