Darshan Kumar has made a special place in the hearts of the audience with every character from ‘Mary Kom’ to ‘The Kashmir Files’ and web series ‘Ashram’. In this special conversation, he discussed the upcoming films and other things …
What are your upcoming films in which you are in the lead role?
Some very good concepts are working and the shooting of two films is almost complete, in which I am in the lead role. Currently, the name is not allowed to revive. Right now talks are going on with producers. Working with big directors is slightly higher as their fees and top level teams are involved.
My previous film like ‘The Kashmir Files’ performed well, which makes the makers the courage that if the concept and the film are good, then good work can be done in a low budget. There are positive signs from the directors, just they need to show a little more confidence. I am sure that the director is now ready to take me in the lead role.

Will the audience now see you more in the lead role?
After ‘The Kashmir files’, ‘cheat’ came in which Madhavan was in the lead role, my character was also strong with him. ‘Paper 2’, in which Anupam ji and I were in the lead roles. So yes, things are changing slowly. My next film is scheduled to release in September, in which I am in the lead.
Another project called ‘RMCS’ is going on and if all goes well, I will sign it too. Apart from this, two-three films are also being discussed. So yes, now I am paying more attention to the lead roles.
What is your scale when choosing a script?
My simple fund is that when I read a script, I read it at once, without disturbance, like an audience. If that story and character touch my heart, I think it will touch the hearts of the audience as well. I see how much power is there in my character. If my heart says ‘yes’, then then I sign that project.
After ‘Mary Kom’ I have done very thoughtful films. I want to do a good job, even if it is less.

How beneficial the web series has been for your career?
I think movies are like a T20 match, where you have limited time and you have to cover many characters within that realm. At the same time, the web series is like a Test match, where you can play openly, develop your character deeply.
Like the theater, after every episode you get to understand the new layers of your character. Another advantage of the web series is that people see it in their personal time and place, which makes a connectivity feel. A web series is equal to about four-five films, so when viewers watch you for so long, they join your character and story. Seeing the love of people during the shooting in London, I realized how deep people would have become with the characters of the web series.
Did Manoj Bajpayee also give some guidance during ‘The Family Man’?
Amazing Experience! In ‘The Family Man’, most of our scenes were shot at different locations. However, this time we got a chance to work together. He fed a very tasty mutton with his hand, which I had never eaten in my life before. I have also worked with him in ‘Baaghi 2’ earlier. He always feels like an elder brother. He is always supportive and we discus a lot on scenes because we are both the theater.
If he works very hard on scenes, it is very fun. He too has come from a small town like me and has reached such a big point today, so he also guides about how to deal with his experience and difficult time. Working with a great and good person like him is amazing experience. I have completed the shooting of ‘The Family Man’ season 3 and dubbing is still going on. It will soon come on Amazon Prime Video.
How was the experience of working in ‘Ashram’ with Bobby Deol?
Bobby Deol is also the best person as the best artist. When we were shooting the first part of ‘Ashram’ in Ayodhya, our rooms were around. He often used to sit on the couch and call everyone and rehearses, talk so that we could work well on the characters.

He has a lot of passion for work and he treats me like a younger brother. I can call them for any work even at midnight. He always responds like an elder brother. We keep talking on video calls almost every week. My relationship with them has become like a family. After coming to Mumbai in Delhi, I got a family and an elder brother, what could be more happy than this.
Did Bobby Deol ever discuss some personal things during the shoot?
The ‘ashram’ proved to be very lucky for him. After this, there is no need to look back and worked very hard on this project. I remember how hard we used to work on every scene. He worked very hard to show his character ‘Baba’ as a gullible man and a vicious Conman. His hard work paid off and today he is everywhere.
As an actor we also like that we should never give up. My favorite line is, “The boat is not crossed in fear of the waves, those who try never lose.” Bobby Bhai showed that he kept faith in himself, worked hard and see how many projects he is signing today.
Prakash Jha repeats artists. Has any other project discussed after ‘Ashram’?
He is currently focusing on his new film. The fourth part of ‘Ashram’ is probably going to talk and the script is working. I hope that if he makes something, we will definitely remember us. God should do this thing to them and remember them.

Apart from acting, what else are you interested in?
I used to write poems in my childhood and I loved to perform them. He is a little fond of writing but he is an amateur. I am still writing some things and apart from this, my interest is also growing in direction, so I might also direct a film in future.
