The relief and rescue operation being carried out after the Pipalkoti Tunnel accident located in Chamoli, Uttarakhand has now ended. Rescue teams have also taken out the body of the last missing worker trapped in the tunnel. A total of 10 laborers lost their lives in this accident, while 12 people were injured.

On August 13, 2026, water and huge amount of debris suddenly entered the under construction tail race tunnel of THDC with 444 MW capacity located at Haat-Siyasain, Mayapur (Pipalkoti). Due to this incident, 22 laborers working inside the tunnel were trapped there.

Immediately after the incident, teams of district administration, police, NDRF and SDRF jointly started the rescue operation on war footing.

Search operation conducted amidst mud and water drainage

Debris and water had accumulated up to several feet inside the tunnel, due to which the rescue team had to face a lot of challenges in entering inside. The help of big suction pumps and advanced tools was taken to remove the debris and drain the water. In this campaign that went on day and night, the teams conducted search operations in every corner of the tunnel.

12 laborers injured in the accident were immediately admitted to the hospital for treatment. At the same time, as soon as the body of the last missing laborer was found, it was sent to the District Hospital Gopeshwar for post-mortem and further formalities.

The district administration and all concerned departments carried out this risky rescue operation by maintaining better coordination among themselves. Officials were constantly present at the spot and monitoring the situation, so that there was no shortage of resources in the relief work. Now with the recovery of the last laborer, the rescue operation that has been going on for the past several days has now come to an end.
