The Republic of India is preparing to celebrate its 77th anniversary. India is moving towards becoming a world power and the country’s economy is moving towards the goal of becoming five trillion. This India is also competing with confidence in the field of modern technology and AI. India is laying a network of magnificent national highways, this India is planting its flag in space as well as on land. But in this very India, where on one hand the glittering skyscrapers have become a reflection of modern India, on the other hand there also resides another India in this same India, which is not visible to any government and which should be concerned with the people.
The country’s capital Delhi, from where policies are decided for crores of Indians. We have seen pictures of sparkling Delhi, but today we are going to tell you about that Delhi, whose pictures no one wants to see.
New Delhi Mubarakpur is a small town at a distance of only 50 kilometers from. In this very Sharma Colony of Mubarakpur, that picture of Delhi is visible which no one wants to see. There is neither monsoon nor any river nearby, yet hundreds of houses in Sharma Enclave or Sharma Colony are submerged in such dirty water that leave alone living, even breathing seems like a compulsion.
For the last 7-8 months, hundreds of thousands of people of Sharma Colony are living their lives in helplessness. Be it sewage coming out of houses or drain water, everything is stagnant in the colony. Every street has been transformed into a Venice of dirty water. It is difficult to stand for a moment in the smell and filth. Local people say that many people have escaped from this hell and have started living in rented houses. Gumboots are unusual in Delhi’s attire but it is impossible to walk in these streets without gumboots.
Sharma Colony became hell when the filling of debris started on the vacant DDA land nearby. Local people say that Malwa from the mountain of garbage located in Bhalswa is being filled in the empty ground here, due to which the drainage gate of water is becoming narrow and the same water has camped in the houses in their streets for the last 8 months.
All the stuff in one Amma’s house is rotting in water. This woman has shifted with her family to the upper floor of the house and is living her life there in bad smell. People have spent hundreds of thousands of rupees from their own pockets and dumped debris in the streets so that there is scope for walking. It is not that complaints about this were not made to the government or administration or leaders. People say that they begged at every door but whether it was Babu or the government, no one was concerned with them. Seeing such neglect, it seems as if this colony does not exist on government paper.
People living in filth for months are surrounded by diseases, children face difficulty in going to school and the fear of snakes coming out of water also scares them. Local people say that everyone from the local MLA to councilor Liam SDM has made rounds but after the completion of those rounds, no steps were ever taken to improve the picture of Sharma Colony even a little.
Delhi government sources say that it is developing two major trunk drains to provide permanent relief from the problem of waterlogging. 4.5 km long Kirari-Mundka Halt Supplementary Drain, which costs Rs 220.93 crore. Will cover Kirari, Mundka, Bawana and Nangloi areas. This drain will serve a catchment area of 1,520 acres and will have a drainage capacity of 760 cusecs. Parallelly, the 7.2 km long Kirari–Rithala Trunk Drain, a Rs 250.21 crore DDA project, has been designed with a higher drainage capacity of 1,160 cusecs to address the long-standing waterlogging problem in Kirari and Rohini.
MCD, PWD, Delhi Jal Board, DDA, Corporation Councilor, Local Councilor, Local MLA, Local MP, Delhi Government and the Central Government which has more than half the power in Union Territory of Delhi, it is the responsibility of all these people to free hundreds of thousands of people of Sharma Colony from this hellish life but it is unfortunate that someone in India has turned a blind eye to their plight.
Apart from the government claims, the pictures captured till date on the cameras at least definitely explain that if arrangements had been made for drainage of water in this area before soil filling, then Sharma Enclave would not have turned into a hell. Had the water coming out of this colony not been obstructed by dumping debris or arrangements had been made to drain the water before dumping the debris, hundreds of thousands of people would not have been forced to live a hellish life for months.
