On Wednesday (January 21), the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the demand of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to hold the match in Sri Lanka instead of India. BCB had made this demand citing security reasons.
In the ICC Board meeting, 14 out of 16 member countries voted against the BCB proposal. Only Pakistan supported Bangladesh. ICC made it clear that there will be no change in the schedule and venue of the tournament, although BCB has been given one day’s extra time for consideration.

Bangladeshi captain had said – the whole of Bangladesh is still in suspense regarding the World Cup. At the same time, Bangladesh T20 captain Liton Das said after the BPL match on Tuesday – ‘The World Cup is still far away. We don’t know yet whether we will go to the World Cup or not. Like me, the whole of Bangladesh is in suspense right now.

What will happen if Bangladesh withdraws from World Cup?
Scotland will get entry in the World Cup instead of Bangladesh. The Scottish team was ranked number-3 in the European qualifiers after Netherlands and Italy. In such a situation, they will get a place in Group C and the team will play all the matches of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s first match on 7 February
The T20 World Cup is to be played in India and Sri Lanka from 7th February. Bangladesh has been placed in Group C in the tournament. Its three group matches are to be played at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. The team’s last group stage match is to be held in Mumbai.

Demand to change group also rejected
In the meeting on January 17, BCB had demanded to change the group, which was refused by ICC. The ICC also assured the BCB that there is no significant security threat to the Bangladesh team.
Bangladesh Cricket Board had asked ICC to include it in Group-B instead of Group-C. The board’s reasoning was that if this happens, Bangladesh will have to play all its matches in Sri Lanka, this will reduce the problems related to travel and security.
As per the current schedule, Ireland have to play their Group B matches against Sri Lanka, Australia and Oman in Colombo, while their last match will be against Zimbabwe in Kandy. On the other hand, Bangladesh has to play three matches in its current Group C against West Indies, Italy and England in Kolkata, while the last group match is scheduled against Nepal in Mumbai.
Controversy over exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from IPL
BCCI has not allowed Mustafizur Rahman to play in IPL due to the killing of Hindus in Bangladesh. He was dropped from the team by KKR on January 3 at the behest of BCCI.
Angered by this, the Bangladesh government banned the telecast of IPL matches. After this, citing the safety of the players, there was also a demand to change the venue of the T-20 World Cup to be held from February 7.

KKR bought Mustafizur for ₹9.2, then controversy over joining IPL
On December 16, in the IPL mini auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought Bangladeshi bowler Mustafizur Rahman for Rs 9.20 crore. After this, Mustafizur started being opposed in India due to the killing of Hindus in Bangladesh. So far 7 Hindus have been murdered there. Later BCCI did not allow Mustafizur to play IPL and on January 3, KKR released him.
