Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh was his first coach. Yograj still gives coaching to children. Yograj also works as an actor in Punjabi films. Yograj Singh recently spoke openly about the time when he started training the younger Yuvraj against the wishes of the family. He recalled that Yuvraj was just 5-6 years old when he threw his medals and skates out of the car because they wanted to create a cricket champion who would one day avenge him.
‘I’ll shoot myself’
In a conversation on the YouTube channel Sports Launchpad By Saurav Yaduvanshi Yograj Singh He recalled an incident when Yuvraj was a few months old. He said, ‘One day I was very sad, crying a lot and wondering what God has done to me. At 2-3 in the night I picked up Yuvi and hugged her. I thought it wouldn’t mean anything if I died like this. Even my family members will say that this man did not do anything. I placed Yuvi in front of Guru Granth Sahib and asked him to either take me or bless him. He further said that he did not want to live like a loser. Yograj said, ‘I will shoot myself.’
Yograj Singh recalled that when Yuvraj was around one and a half years old, he had given him a plastic bat and as soon as he hit the ball, he used so much force that it broke the window glass. Yograj said that till that time he had not taught anything to his son. He told, ‘I thought this child was a package. He had just started walking.
Yograj told that as Yuvraj started growing up, he started playing tennis and skating and his interest in cricket started decreasing. Yograj took some drastic steps to bring him back to cricket. He said, ‘I wanted my son to take revenge for me, from the system, from the selectors and from all those who laughed at me.’ Yograj once played cricket with Kapil Dev, who later became one of the most popular players of his era.
Throw out Yuvraj’s medals
Yograj Singh recalled, ‘One day Yuvraj was playing in a skating competition and he got a lot of medals. We sat in the car and I took her medals and threw them out of the car. This was a wrong thing. Then I took his skates and threw them outside and he started crying. As soon as the little prince started crying, Yograj roared and said, ‘Shut up.’ Since he had a ‘very bad temper’, Yuvraj and his mother did not speak much in the car.
On reaching home, Yograj’s mother told him to leave the house if he continued to harass Yuvraj like this. He said, ‘He said it was better for you to die. He said that if you behave like this with my grandson then leave the house. He abused me a lot. I told them, ‘Either I will live in this house or he will live there. I want him to play cricket, and I won’t leave until he plays. You can do whatever you want. Yograj proudly announced that he had made Yuvraj play cricket even while fighting cancer. Yograj finally said, ‘This is how champions are made.’
