कोलकाता रेप-मर्डर केस, बांग्लादेश की यूनिवर्सिटी में प्रदर्शन: छात्र बोले- पीड़ित को न्याय मिले, महिलाओं की सुरक्षा सरकार का फर्ज

Doctors across India are on a 24-hour strike demanding justice in the Kolkata rape-murder case.

Protests were held in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. On Friday, students of Dhaka University protested under the banner of ‘Awaaz Tolo Nari’ i.e. ‘Raise your voice for women’.

Rehnuma Ahmed Niret, a student of the university’s physics department, told the Dhaka Tribune, “We are aware of the irresponsible attitude of the medical administration in the Kolkata rape case. As women, we demand that the administration provide necessary legal aid to the victim’s family. We will also punish the accused and implement the law afresh.”

In Jodhpur, resident doctors have also stopped working in the emergency and ICU. Only senior doctors are looking after emergency services.

‘We are in favour of demonstrations for justice in the Kolkata case’
Anya Fahmin, a student of the Department of Anthropology, said, “Rape-like incidents happen with women all over the world. We support the protest being held at RG Kar Medical College to punish the culprits. We also demand that the case of Sohgi Jahan Tonu rape-murder case in Bangladesh be tried publicly. It is the duty of the government to create a safe environment for women in the country.”

Lamisha Jahan, a student of Jahangirnagar University, said that in many rape cases, the names of the culprits are hidden, while the name of the victim is openly discussed. Many times the government also tries to suppress the cases. We need to raise our voice against all kinds of atrocities against women.

Doctors on strike in India, protests across the country
In fact, on 9 August, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped late at night in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. After this, she was murdered. Violence took place in the same hospital late at night on 4 August, after which the Indian Medical Association (IMA) decided to hold protests and a doctors’ strike across the country on 17 August.

After this, resident doctors went on strike in Rajasthan today. In view of this, 200 operations were postponed. Hundreds of resident doctors stopped working in all government hospitals of Madhya Pradesh including AIIMS in Bhopal. Meanwhile, more than 1 lakh patients have not been able to get treatment amid the protests going on for 5 days in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry has asked the doctors to end the strike. The ministry issued a statement saying, “A committee will be formed to look into the demands of the doctors. Suggestions will also be sought from the state governments for security.”

A rape victim in Bangladesh has not received justice for 8 years
Earlier, Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a second year history student at Cumilla Victoria College in Bangladesh, was gang-raped and murdered. The incident took place on 20 March 2016. In May 2017, the CID had said on the basis of DNA test that Tonu was raped by three accused.

After this, many suspects were questioned in the case. However, the accused could not be identified even then. After this, the case was handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) of Bangladesh. Even after questioning many people including family members and college staff for 4 years, no information about the accused has been found till now.
