Karan Johar used to be made fun of in childhood
Today, Karan Johar may be considered the most confident and stylish filmmaker of Bollywood, but in his childhood, he was a very scared and underconfident child.
Karan had said in an interview to Nikhil Taneja, ‘My parents were also worried because I was very shy and introverted. Today perhaps people will not believe this, but I was afraid to go among the people. I was very effeminate (girlish) in my childhood and was also overweight. Whenever I went to play any sport, people used to make fun of me. People used to say that I run strangely or that my hand gestures are different.
He had said, ‘In the 80s people used to use the word ‘pansy’. The way the words ‘gay’ or ‘homo’ are misspelled today, at that time it was called ‘pansy’. This word completely pushed me into a shell. Whenever I tried to play football, basketball or cricket, people used to make fun of my body language. Because of this I became very introverted.

He advised Karan to bring baritone in his voice so that his voice sounds more manly.
Karan had told that he had taken training from him for 3 years. Although Karan had told his parents that he was going to a computer class, he was hesitant in telling the real reason. Three years later, when a computer came to Karan’s father’s office, he asked Karan to try it out because he had learned computers for so many years. The filmmaker had told that he had never taken a computer class even for a single day in his life, hence seeing the computer he felt as if an alien was standing in front of him. At that time he could not give any answer.
Father was against coming to films, mother did not talk to him for a month Today Karan Johar is the top filmmaker of the film industry, but there was a time when his own parents did not want him to enter the industry. Karan’s film career started with the film ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ – 1995). He was an Assistant Director (AD) in the film.

In DDLJ, Karan played a small role of Shahrukh Khan’s (Raj) friend.
Karan had told in a conversation with Jai Shetty that his father Yash Johar and mother Hiroo Johar did not want him to enter the film industry. When Aditya Chopra asked Karan to assist in his first film DDLJ, Karan wanted to go to Paris to further study French.
Karan had told that his father also had a small export-import business and France was among his big clients. Therefore, the family wanted him to learn French and take over the business. His father did make films, but he suffered continuous losses in his films. For this reason, he did not want his son to enter the same industry.
Karan had also told that when he decided to go into films, his mother did not talk to him for about a month.

Karan Johar’s father Yash Johar had produced films like ‘Dostana’ (1980), ‘Duniya’ (1984), ‘Muqaddar Ka Faisla’ (1987) and ‘Agneepath’ (1990).
According to Karan, Aditya had told him, ‘You are made for films. You are overdramatic, melodramatic, you like songs and dance. Why are you running away from films?
After this Karan asked for only one year from his family. He said that if he is not able to make any mark in the film industry, he will choose another path. During this time, he worked on the sets of DDLJ, where he met Shahrukh Khan and Kajol closely. Later this film proved to be a blockbuster and Karan Johar’s film career also started.
Shahrukh gave direction advice to Karan
Karan had told in an interview given to Galata Plus that during the shooting of DDLJ, Shahrukh Khan had told him that he should direct his own film and he would also work in it. Kajol, who was present nearby, also showed interest in this matter.
But Karan felt that both of them were just joking or talking like this. When he told this to his father, he also could not believe it.
Karan had told that his father said, ‘These people have gone mad.’ His mother also thought that both of them were joking.

Shahrukh has worked in the lead role under Karan’s direction in 4 films ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ and ‘My Name is Khan’.
After this, Shahrukh himself called Yash Johar and said that after the film ‘Duplicate’ he will work in a film directed by Karan. On this Yash Johar had told Karan, ‘He has gone mad, saying that he will do the film directed by you. What do you know about direction?’
Later Shahrukh heard the script of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and gave his dates for the shooting of the film in 1997. This film, released in 1998, proved to be a superhit. The story of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ was based on the love triangle of Rahul (Shahrukh Khan), Anjali (Kajol) and Tina (Rani Mukherjee).

Karan had said, ‘I was thinking this again and again – Oh God, I am directing Amitabh Bachchan.’ He told that as soon as the shooting started, his nervousness increased so much that he felt upset. He was running to the bathroom again and again. On the third day his condition worsened so much that he became completely weak and fell down.
Karan told that he came out of the bathroom, called Farah Khan and fell unconscious there. When he regained consciousness, Amitabh Bachchan was sitting in front. Karan had a drip in his hand and doctors were standing nearby.
According to Karan, Amitabh Bachchan told him, ‘Karan, don’t worry… we will dance well, I promise.’
The filmmaker had said that at that moment he realized how humble a person Amitabh Bachchan is despite being such a big actor.

I neither deny things nor lie.
Karan had further said, ‘People say that my life is an open book. There are some things which I did not write, but when I do not hide such big truths of my life then why would I hide that I have taken Ozempic or Munjaro?
He had further said in a humorous manner, ‘If I had taken these medicines, I would have instantly said that yes, I have taken them and it is good for me. I also tell people to take it too. Maybe later they will also make me their brand ambassador. I would have gone through that phase and maybe even monetized it.

Karan Johar lost about 20 kg of weight in seven months (between 2024 and 2025). For this he mainly adopted OMAD (One Meal a Day) diet and also got treatment for his thyroid problem.
