An explosion occurred on Sunday evening at the LNG complex of Ras Laffan, Qatar’s largest gas plant. 13 people have died in this, while 66 people have been injured. Al-Kaabi said the explosion occurred at the Barzan Local Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City. Those injured in the accident include citizens of India, Qatar, Tanzania, Pakistan, Guinea, Nepal, Bangladesh, Kenya and Nigeria. The Energy Minister said that it was an accident. There is no indication of any conspiracy or deliberate action. According to him, the production of the plant was completely stopped from December 2025 due to necessary repairs and it was restarted only two days ago. The investigation into the cause of the accident has been started. The sound of the explosion was heard till the capital Doha. According to QatarEnergy, there was an explosion and fire at the Barzan Local Gas Supply Facility during the process of starting operations on Sunday evening. Emergency teams immediately reached the spot and the fire has now been brought under control. According to Reuters, the explosion was so loud that its sound was heard till the capital Doha. People living 70 kilometers away also got scared. However, Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said the accident posed no threat to the environment and gas supplies from Qatar would continue. The Barzan gas plant, where the accident occurred, is part of Ras Laffan, Qatar’s largest gas hub. Gas is sent from this area to many countries of the world. This affected about 17% of Qatar’s gas export capacity. According to the CEO of QatarEnergy, the complete repair of these units may take three to five years. During the Iran War, the company had to remove about 10 thousand employees from the gas plants. However, no injuries were reported in the missile attack in March.
