29 people were hanged in Iran on Wednesday. 26 people were hanged in Gejalhasr prison outside Tehran and the remaining 3 people were hanged in the prison of Karaj city. According to AFP, a Norwegian human rights organization has made this claim.

Those hanged included two Afghan nationals. They were accused of murder, drug trafficking and rape. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) and the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) have also confirmed the hanging of at least two dozen people in Gejalhasr prison.

Iran has repeatedly been accused of carrying out the death penalty for those involved in the 2022 protests in a bid to instill fear among the people.

Death penalty cases on the rise in Iran
Mahmood Amiri Moghaddam, director of Iran-based human rights organization IHR, said that the international community is not paying much attention to this. Because of this, the Iranian government may hang hundreds of people in the coming months. He also said that this is the first time since 2009 that such a large number of people are being hanged.

According to the report, earlier on Tuesday, human rights groups had criticized the hanging of a man in Iran. The man was found guilty of killing a Revolutionary Guard. Activists say that he was tortured to confess.

The name of the person who has been sentenced to death is Gelmreza Rasai. He is the tenth person to be hanged for being connected to the protests that started in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini.

There were protests in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini
22-year-old Mahsa Amini of the Kurdish community was arrested in Tehran on 13 September 2022. Actually she was not wearing a hijab. She died 3 days after her arrest, i.e. on 16 September. After this the matter came into the headlines.
