Now a new color has started appearing on the roads of Delhi-NCR. Where the roads used to be filled with green colored CNG autos, some parts have now turned blue. The blue color is visible not only on the roads of metro cities but also in small cities and towns. We are talking about electric vehicles.

The electric revolution that people were looking for in the car market seems to be happening somewhere in the scooter and three-wheeler segments. You will now see a large number of electric three-wheelers on the roads. From autos to luggage carrying three-wheelers are now coming in electric avatar and the market has started accepting it.

In April 2026, the market share of electric three-wheelers has crossed 60 percent. Where the total share of CNG, diesel and petrol vehicles has remained less than 40 percent. The share of CNG three-wheelers is about 25 percent. Whereas diesel is 14.16 percent.

Electric takes over in 3-wheeler segment

This revolution of electric three-wheeler is not limited to big cities only. The real change is visible in small towns and rural areas. Electric autos and e-rickshaws have become the biggest option for employment, earning and low-cost transport. Mahindra and Bajaj are leaders in this segment.

Federation of automobile Data from the Dealers Association (FADA) and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) show that the electric three-wheeler segment has registered record growth in the last two years. The biggest thing is that a large part of this growth has come from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

According to SIAM, a total of 8.36 lakh three-wheelers were sold in FY2025-26, which is 12.8 percent more than last year. In the fourth quarter of FY 2026 itself, 2.27 lakh units were sold, which has a growth of 26.7 percent.

According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), 8,30,819 electric three-wheelers (EV 3W) have been sold across the country in the financial year 2025-26, which is about 19 percent more than last year. In April 2026, electric vehicles will have more than 60 percent share in the total three-wheelers sold in the country.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has also said in its 2026 report that India continues to be the world’s largest electric three-wheeler market and more than two-thirds of the three-wheelers sold in the country are now electric. Small cities have a big role in the electric three-wheeler market.

Big role of small towns

According to FADA, more than 52 percent of three-wheeler retail sales in financial year 2025 came from rural and small towns. This is the reason why auto companies are now focusing on Tier-2 and Tier-3 markets. Ayush Lohia, CEO of Zuperia Auto, said that the real center of India’s EV revolution is now small cities. The demand for EV is not limited to just metro cities.

He said, ‘The real story of EV in India is being written in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.’ Ayush said that people in small towns are now seeing EV not just as a new technology but as a means to increase income. Especially drivers, small businessmen and delivery operators are now considering electric autos as a more profitable deal.

According to him, the biggest reason for EV adoption in small cities is low running cost. While petrol or CNG autos cost more money, electric autos are giving more savings at less cost. This is the reason why the growth of EV three wheelers is more in small cities.
