The picture is of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, where the famous ‘Miao Sisters Festival’ of the Miao community was celebrated. Girls participated in the parade organized during this period wearing their cultural costumes and heavy silver jewelery with intricate carvings. It is mainly a festival of China, where the Miao community has the largest population. Apart from this, this festival is also celebrated in countries like Thailand and Vietnam. On this day, young boys and girls meet each other by singing traditional songs, playing musical instruments and dancing and choose their life partners. The most special tradition of this festival is ‘Sisters’ Rice’. On this occasion, colorful rice is cooked using leaves and flowers of trees. Girls keep these special rice in handkerchiefs or baskets and present them to the young men. Other small symbols given along with the rice represent messages of love, refusal or friendship between the youth. History and Legend of the Miao Sisters Food Festival According to folklore, once upon a time, an old man and his wife had three beautiful daughters. One day, while they were playing on the river bank, the girls felt the pain of loneliness and love. The bearded god, Zhang Guolao, entered the girls’ souls and asked them to make five-colored glutinous rice rolls filled with shrimp, fish, and other special ingredients. When the young men came down from the mountain, beautiful girls presented them with rice and they fell in love with them. China’s Sisters’ Meal Festival is deeply rooted in Miao culture, dating back hundreds of years. It originally began as a courtship ritual, in which young Miao girls would prepare special meals and present them to grooms willing to marry. These foods, wrapped in colorful silk and decorated with symbolic decorations, carried secret messages about a woman’s feelings for her lover. Different objects inside the rice packet represented different emotions, two chopsticks indicated interest, while a chilli symbolized disapproval.
