A playful “executive order” signed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has delighted basketball fans online after he temporarily “repealed” bedtimes for children so they can stay up and watch the New York Knicks compete in the NBA Finals.
“Today, I signed an Executive Order temporarily repealing bedtimes in the City of New York so that kids of all ages can watch our team in the NBA Finals. As Mayor, you’re forced to make many difficult decisions. This was not one of them. Go Knicks,” Mamdani shared in a post on X.
The NBA (National Basketball Association) is North America’s premier professional basketball league, while the New York Knicks are one of the league’s most popular and historic franchises.
A clip that accompanied Mamdani’s post showed the mayor seated at his desk, surrounded by children, as he signed the tongue-in-cheek order.
“Repealing Kids’ Bedtimes For Knicks Finals Run,” read the title of the document. It opened by noting that the New York Knicks had not reached the NBA Finals since 1999 and argued that New Yorkers of all ages should be able to support the team during its championship run.
The order further stated that bedtimes should not stand in the way of “New York’s Cutest” cheering for the Knicks and watching every moment of the historic series.
Invoking his role as the city’s self-described “Knicks Fan-in-Chief”, Mamdani declared that bedtimes across New York City were repealed for the duration of the NBA Finals so that children could root for their team. The document concluded with a rallying cry – “Go New York Go New York Go” – and said the order would remain in effect until the Knicks completed, and hopefully won, their championship campaign.

Mamdani was joined by a group of children dressed in Knicks colours during the signing ceremony, with the youngsters also “signing” the order using their handprints.
The gesture comes as the Knicks prepare for the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, with multiple games in the best-of-seven series set to tip off at 8:30 pm ET on school nights, making Zohran Mamdani’s mock suspension of bedtimes especially relevant for younger fans.
