Vinesh Phogat faces WFI ban and doping allegations, responds with a defiant X post as her wrestling comeback plans are put on hold.

2018 Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat’s latest X post, hours after she was barred by the Wrestling Federation of India to take part in tournaments for a month, has gone viral on social media.

Phogat on Saturday, May 9, signalled her intent to fight back after WFI issued a detailed show-cause notice accusing her of indiscipline and anti-doping rule violations, while also ruling her ineligible to compete in domestic events until June 26.

The WFI stated that Phogat hadn’t completed the mandatory six-month notice period required for athletes making a comeback from retirement under UWW Anti-Doping Rules.

That means Phogat will have to delay her comeback plans. She had been aiming to return to competition at the National Open Ranking event in Gonda, scheduled to start on Sunday, May 10.

Phogat had stepped away from the sport in 2024 after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics.

Earlier in the day, the WFI, in a 15-page notice, alleged that Phogat’s behaviour had caused ‘lasting damage to the reputation of Indian wrestling’ in Paris and violated provisions of the WFI Constitution, UWW International Wrestling Rules and anti-doping regulations.

Allegations have intensified over the past few days. Phogat had accused the WFI of blocking her entry for the Gonda event and also stated that she was among the six complainants against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment.
