Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Thursday.
This would be Xi’s first visit to India in seven years, after the bilateral relations ties took a hit after the 2020 Galwan Valley border clashes.
The September 12-13 summit in New Delhi comes more than six months after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran, a BRICS member since 2024. The conflict has led to a virtual shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s key choke points in the oil trade, pushing crude prices to over $100 a barrel.

Xi’s India Visits
Xi last visited India in 2019 for an informal summit with Modi in Mamallapuram near Chennai. He had earlier visited Goa in 2016 to attend the BRICS summit and made his first visit to India in September 2014, when he held extensive talks with Modi. The 2014 visit came during the first terms of both leaders in office.
He later visited India in 2016 to take part in the BRICS summit in Goa.
BRICS
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025.
It emerged as an influential grouping as it brings together 11 major emerging economies of the world, representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population, around 40 per cent of the global GDP and around 26 per cent of the global trade.
