Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, along with several state Cabinet ministers, staged a protest outside the office of Chief Electoral Officer V. Anbukkumar on Thursday, demanding an FIR over the alleged fraudulent deletion of voters during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Shivakumar and the ministers sat on the steps outside the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, insisting that the Election Commission take action against those who allegedly submitted fraudulent Form 7 applications seeking deletion of voters.
Shivakumar said he would not leave the Election Commission office until he was satisfied with the action taken by the authorities.
“I will wait till I get justice. I will wait and wait,” Shivakumar said during the protest.
“As far as Karnataka is concerned, after the new SIR, a special SIR has been started. On behalf of the Government of Karnataka, we cooperated with the Election Commission… A big conspiracy is going on in Karnataka… In more than 70% of the booths, we have identified that various BJP leaders have been taking Form 7 without any identification. Pre-printed forms have been supplied, and they are being given to BJP party leaders.,” he added.
The CM also questioned how details relating to voters could have been accessed and allegedly used for filing deletion applications.
“How can they have confidential details?” Shivakumar asked, alleging that an attempt was being made to delete around 10,000 votes in each of Karnataka’s 224 Assembly constituencies.
He claimed that the alleged exercise had begun in Mahadevapura and said, “They have started from Karnataka.”
Shivakumar said he wanted the Election Commission to file a complaint leading to an FIR against those who had allegedly submitted fraudulent Form 7 applications.
“I can’t leave and go without being satisfied by the action taken by the Election Commission,” he said.
Cabinet Meeting Postponed
The Karnataka Chief Minister also postponed the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Thursday evening amid the protest.
Shivakumar said the Election Commission had called a video conference with all district commissioners in connection with the issue.
The protest comes amid allegations of large-scale voter deletions during the SIR exercise in Karnataka. The state government has sought action against those allegedly involved in submitting fraudulent applications for deletion of names from electoral rolls.
