Troy Aikman has spent two decades talking football into a microphone. Now the Hall of Fame quarterback is talking about life without one. At a Dallas book event on Wednesday night, he gave fans a number that stopped the room. His contract with ESPN ends after the Super Bowl, and no extension has arrived. Meanwhile, Joe Buck, his booth partner, already holds a long new deal. Aikman did not sound bitter. He sounded curious. That mix of calm and uncertainty may tell us more about the NFL media market than any contract rumor ever could.
Troy Aikman Puts A 50-50 Number On His Broadcasting Future
The comment came during a session for Peter King’s new book, The Game. Veteran reporter Tim Cowlishaw relayed it, and it was blunt.
“I would say there’s a 50-50 chance (he won’t do TV next year),”
His five-year, $90 million deal with ESPN runs out soon. Buck, who has called games beside Aikman since 2022, reportedly landed a six-year, $108 million extension. That gap is hard to ignore.
Aikman did not trash the job. He called broadcasting a great profession. Then he explained why he feels free for the first time.
“I still believe it could very well be something else. And what that might be, like, I’m not talking in code by any means. I’m not real sure.
“Maybe it’s a continuation of broadcasting with some other network, which would be exciting to me. Maybe it’s doing some work with an organization. I really enjoyed the time that I spent with the Miami Dolphins this past offseason. Maybe there could be something there if nothing comes about in broadcasting. Or who knows what might happen. But, for the first time, I’m kinda open for business, and I’m looking forward to figuring out what those options might be.”

The TV market is not rolling out red carpets. CBS has already chosen J.J. Watt to replace Tony Romo. A top seat at Prime Video opens only if the network buys out Kirk Herbstreit. Few chairs, many names.
Jerry Jones And The Dallas Cowboys Could Offer Troy Aikman A Second Act
Jerry Jones noticed. The Dallas Cowboys owner spoke to 105.3 The Fan on October 27, when asked about a front office role for his former quarterback.
“Troy Aikman is just getting started in his life,” Jones told The Fan. “I think the world of him. He’s outstanding. The answer is not that we’re necessarily going to do anything more direct with the team at this time, but don’t rule it out. It’s very possible.”
That is not a job offer. It is a warm nod, and Aikman has earned it. He won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys (XXVII, XXVIII and XXX), and his broadcast years sharpened his view of the game. His work with the Dolphins looks like a test run for a move similar to the ones Matt Millen and John Lynch made from the booth to the front office.
For now, Aikman still has a season to call. After that, the next call may come from a rival network or from Dallas.
