For nearly 200 years, Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain’s monarch. But that tradition is set to end under King Charles III.
Royal officials have confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla will not move into Buckingham Palace once its decade-long £369 million refurbishment is completed in 2027. Instead, they will continue to live at nearby Clarence House, their long-time London residence.
Why Is The King Staying At Clarence House?
According to palace officials, the decision was taken after “careful consideration” and is aimed at allowing Buckingham Palace to function primarily as the ceremonial and operational headquarters of the monarchy while significantly expanding public access to the historic building.
Although Charles and Camilla will not permanently reside there, they will have access to private rooms inside Buckingham Palace for use during working days and occasional overnight stays if required.
What Happens To Buckingham Palace?
Buckingham Palace will remain the centre of royal life, hosting state banquets, diplomatic receptions, investitures, garden parties and official ceremonies.
Officials described the palace as the monarchy’s “headquarters”, saying it would continue to be the King’s principal workplace even if it is no longer his primary home.

The refurbishment, which began in 2017, involves replacing ageing electrical wiring, plumbing, heating systems and other infrastructure to reduce fire and flood risks while preserving the Grade I-listed building for future generations.
The project is expected to cost around £369 million and is due to be completed in 2027.
A Break From Nearly Two Centuries Of Tradition
Buckingham Palace has been the monarch’s official London residence since Queen Victoria moved there in 1837. Charles’ decision means the palace will no longer serve as the full-time home of the reigning monarch during his reign, marking a significant break with nearly two centuries of royal tradition.
Clarence House, where Charles has lived for more than two decades, will remain his London residence while Buckingham Palace continues to serve as the public face and administrative centre of the British monarchy.
