BJP leader and businessman RK Sinha has been at the centre of media gaze after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was seen unexpectedly touching his feet at an event.
This occurred during the Chitragupta Puja celebration at the Adi Chitragupta Temple, Naujar Ghat. The gesture sparked widespread curiosity about Sinha.
Ravindra Kishore Sinha, known as RK Sinha, founded Security and Intelligence Services (India) Limited (SIS), India’s largest private security firm. He established the company in Patna in 1974, and today it operates in numerous countries, including India and Australia. Forbes estimates RK Sinha’s current net worth to be Rs 8300 crore (1 billion dollars).
Sinha’s SIS Group is recognised as a leader in the manpower security business in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 36,000 permanent employees and 3,000 corporate clients. RK Sinha’s SIS receives the most revenue from Australia.
SIS has also formed a joint venture with Spain’s Prosegur to provide cash logistics services. RK Sinha is not only a successful businessman but also a politician. Sinha is one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has also been a Rajya Sabha MP.
Born into a family with limited resources in Patna, RK Sinha obtained a degree in Political Science in 1971. To assist his family financially, he began working part-time as a trainee reporter after completing his studies. During this period, the Indo-Pakistan war broke out, prompting Sinha to travel to the war front as a reporter.
There, he formed close bonds with soldiers from the Bihar Regiment. Following the war, he became a staunch supporter of the JP movement, which emerged in 1973. However, his involvement led to his dismissal from his job.
When RK Sinha was fired, the company gave him two months’ salary, which amounted to Rs 250. Unsure of his next steps, Sinha spoke with a friend who owned a construction business. His friend mentioned he was looking for ex-soldiers to provide security for his project site.
Since Sinha had got in touch with soldiers of the Bihar Regiment during his time in the war, his friend, recognizing the potential of the situation, suggested he form a security company.
RK Sinha contacted ex-soldiers, many of whom were seeking work after retirement. In February 1974, he established SIS in a two-room garage in Patna. After meeting with contacts in the Bihar Regiment and gathering details of retired personnel, he convinced them to work for his fledgling company. Within a year, SIS employed between 250 and 300 people and achieved a turnover of Rs 1 lakh.
Within a few years of its establishment, SIS achieved tremendous success and became India’s leading private security provider firm. Then the company acquired Australia’s largest security agency, Chubb Security, for $300 million.
To raise money, a 14% stake in SIS had to be sold to New York-based hedge fund DE Shaw. With this deal, SIS became the first Indian multinational company in the security services industry. Currently, SIS Group includes companies like SLV, Uniq Detective and Security Services, Security Services Ltd., Tech SIS, Southern Cross Protection, Henderson, MSS Security and Rare Hospitality.
