Woman’s parents have alleged that she was subjected to continuous harassment after marriage over dowry and jewellery demands.

A newly married woman is battling for her life in a Bengaluru hospital after allegedly attempting suicide due to harassment by her husband and in-laws, just weeks after a lavish wedding and honeymoon.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in B Channasandra near Ramamurthynagar. The woman, identified as Ganavi (24), was found hanging in her room. Her parents intervened within minutes, rescued her and rushed her to a private hospital, where she is currently on a ventilator. Doctors have said she has suffered severe brain damage and remains in critical condition.

According to the police, Ganavi, a B.Com graduate, married Suraj, a resident of Vidyaranyapura, on August 29. The wedding was held at a city kalyana mantapa, followed by a grand reception at Palace Grounds on November 23. Ganavi’s parents allegedly spent around Rs 40 lakh on the reception, reportedly at the insistence of the groom’s family.

The couple later travelled to Sri Lanka for a 10-day honeymoon. However, they returned five days earlier than planned. When Ganavi’s parents questioned Suraj and his family about the early return, they allegedly received evasive responses. Shortly after, Ganavi came back to her parents’ home in B Channasandra.

Ganavi’s parents have alleged that she was subjected to continuous harassment after marriage over dowry and jewellery demands. Police said the family claims the pressure intensified following the honeymoon, leading to emotional distress.

Based on the complaint, Ramamurthynagar police have registered a case against Suraj, his mother Jayanthi and his brother Sanjay under charges of dowry harassment, domestic cruelty and abetment to suicide. The accused are currently being questioned as part of the investigation.

Police officials stated that Ganavi had no prior history of self-harm and that the circumstances surrounding the shortened honeymoon are a key part of the probe. Statements from family members and medical reports will play a crucial role in the case.
