Bayern Munich superstar Harry Kane commended coach Vincent Kompany for his significant role in the side’s development this season, as the German giants approach a potentially historic campaign.
Currently leading Borussia Dortmund by nine points, defending champions Bayern are set to host Union Berlin on Saturday, aiming for another Bundesliga title.
With a German Cup semi-final against Leverkusen and Champions League quarter-finals against Real Madrid in April, Bayern has the opportunity to secure a third treble, a feat no other men’s European team has accomplished.
After Bayern’s decisive victory over Atalanta on Wednesday, the England captain highlighted Kompany’s early stage in his coaching career, despite having already won the Bundesliga title last season.
“In the way we play, we’ve learned and evolved over the last 12 months. I think many people forgot it was Kompany’s first year last year,” Kane said to reporters at the Allianz Arena late Wednesday.
“We were still learning the way he wanted to play, we were still grasping different ideas from him. Now, we’ve really honed in on his concepts, and undoubtedly, we’re a better team this year than last year.”
Often criticised for a lack of silverware, Kane expressed his eagerness to embrace the pressure and spotlight of the big stage.
“Now it’s about proving it on the big stage. We’ve had a fantastic campaign in all competitions so far, but as we know and have discussed before, April and May are when it truly matters.
“So we have to be at our best during those moments.”
With 93 goals in 26 league matches, Bayern are just eight away from the single Bundesliga season record of 101 goals, set in 1971-72.
Kane has scored 30 goals and needs 12 more to break Robert Lewandowski’s single-season record from the 2020-21 season.
Michael Olise is also on track for a record-breaking season. The former Crystal Palace winger has 17 assists, just five short of surpassing Thomas Mueller’s all-time record.
Despite their dominance, Bayern have not had a completely smooth journey this season. Against Union Berlin on Saturday, Bayern will be missing the injured Musiala, Neuer, and Davies, along with Nicolas Jackson, Jonathan Tah, and Luis Diaz, who are all suspended.
