Two people of Indian origin have been fined 1,391 pounds (about Rs 1.45 lakh) for spitting paan in a public place in Brent area of London. According to the report, the council has to spend around 30,000 pounds (about Rs 30 lakh) every year just to clean betel stains. The first case is of Akshitkumar Bhadre Patel, resident of Edgware area. He had spit paan near a metro station on Kingsbury Road in June 2025. He did not appear in the court, so the verdict against him was pronounced in his absence. Due to not paying the fine on time, his amount increased more than 10 times. The second case is of Hitesh Patel, resident of Ruislip area. He spit betel leaf on Wembley Hill Road. He also did not appear in the court and the decision was taken against him in absentia, due to which he was also fined heavily. The problem of betel spitting is increasing in Brent and surrounding areas of north-west London, on which the local administration has become strict. According to BBC report, removing betel stains is difficult and expensive, for this cleaning has to be done in a special way. The council has adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ policy. Under this, warning banners are being put up at various places, officers are patrolling and fines of up to 100 pounds are being imposed on the spot.
