Police investigating the murder of Pune-based realtor Ketan Agarwal suspect his fiance, Siya Goyal, and her alleged lover, Chetan Chaudhary, may have secretly married months before the killing, adding a fresh twist to the high-profile case.
Officials said on Tuesday that investigators are verifying whether Goyal, 20, and Chaudhary, 22, had tied the knot in secret and whether the marriage, if it took place, was legally registered.
The duo are accused of murdering 25-year-old Agarwal by pushing him off a cliff at Lohagad Fort in Pune district on June 18. Agarwal and Goyal were scheduled to marry in November this year.
“Analysis of chats exchanged between Siya and Chetan indicates that they had secretly married. There are unconfirmed reports also about their marriage. We are verifying this claim and also checking whether the marriage was legally registered,” a senior Pune Rural Police official said, as quoted by PTI.
Police are examining mobile phone data and chat records recovered from the accused as part of the investigation into the alleged conspiracy behind Agarwal’s murder.
According to investigators, Goyal and Chaudhary allegedly plotted to kill Agarwal because he had become an obstacle to their relationship.
Police claim the pair carefully planned the murder and even rehearsed the act before allegedly carrying it out at the hill fort.
Both accused are currently in judicial custody as the investigation continues.
