US midterm elections 2026: As Americans head to the polls for the 2026 US midterm elections, the Trump administration issued a stern warning to people it describes as “illegal” voters, threatening to track them down and prosecute them if they attempt to vote despite being ineligible.

Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), said only American citizens should have a say in deciding the country’s elections.

“If you vote illegally in this country, and you are NOT eligible to vote, @DHSgov will find you, hunt you down, and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Only American citizens should be deciding American elections,” Mullin wrote in a post on X.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department announced that it was deploying more than 1,000 election monitors and observers across the country on Election Day to help ensure free and fair elections.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division announced the deployment in a post on X.

“Happy Election Day! @CivilRights is sending 1,000+ monitors & observers to all 50 states to help ensure a free & fair election. Every American’s vote should count,” Dhillon wrote. She also urged voters to report any problems to their local election officials or the department.

The Justice Department described the exercise as the largest election-monitoring effort in its history and the first time it had deployed observers in all 50 states. The operation is being coordinated by the Civil Rights Division, with personnel drawn from various DOJ divisions, US Attorneys’ Offices and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management.

US Midterm Elections 2026: What’s At Stake?

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate are up for grabs in the midterm elections. Voters are also choosing governors in 36 states.

Democrats need a net gain of just three seats in the House and four in the Senate to take control of both chambers from Republicans.

The elections come at a crucial moment for Trump, with Democrats hoping to regain control of Congress and weaken the President’s grip on Washington during the remainder of his term.

Polls have indicated that Democrats are well-positioned to win a majority in the House and could potentially take control of the Senate. The party is seeking to capitalise on voter discontent over Trump’s presidency, rising energy costs and the ongoing conflict with Iran.

A Republican loss in the House would allow Democrats to block or delay parts of Trump’s legislative agenda and launch investigations into his administration. Taking control of the Senate would also give Democrats greater influence over the confirmation of senior officials and any potential Supreme Court appointments.
