US President Donald Trump on Thursday signalled his willingness to stretch the Iran conflict furtherwhile also claiming that the United States forces “knocked the hell out of them“.

Trump reiterated that he won’t allow Iran to pursue a nuclear weapon.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “…I’m doing what should have been done by other presidents…We can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon. In one way, people probably don’t love it, but many people—many great patriots—really do.”

“This should have been done a long time ago by other Presidents. We’ve knocked the hell out of them, and we may go a little further”, Trump added.

His remarks unfolded amid reports that the US and Israel are planning to resume attacks on Iran, with military operations expected to begin before Israel’s elections on October 27, according to Drop Site.

The report came amid stalled diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, even as the United States reportedly deployed additional military assets to the Middle East, fuelling concerns of a fresh escalation in the region.

A US official told Drop Site that military assets were being moved into position ahead of an expected approval from Trump to resume major combat operations against Tehran.

“CENTCOM is putting all the pieces into place to renew major combat operations,” the official said, referring to the US Central Command.

The official, however, did not clarify whether the strikes would begin before Israeli elections.

US-Iran Talks

Although US-Iran talks have remained stalled, media reports indicated that discussions between the two sides have continued via mediators.

According to Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir reached Tehran to deliver an ultimatum from Trump to the Iranian side.

While Asim Munir said that “Tehran would need to show greater flexibility in negotiations over its nuclear programme”, Iran reportedly conveyed to the United States that it would not compromise on its seven stated conditions.
