The Central government on Friday said it is investigating the data breach at Tata Electronics that allegedly exposed confidential documents linked to Apple’s unreleased iPhone 18 Pro models.

“We are investigating,” S. Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), told reporters, adding that the matter has been reported to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the country’s nodal cyber security agency.

The breach has raised concerns as it involves confidential information related to Apple’s upcoming flagship smartphone, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, expected to launch in later September.

What Was Leaked?

According to Reuterssensitive files, including lists of components, supplier details and photographs of unreleased iPhone 18 Pro models, were posted on the dark web after a ransomware group targeted Tata Electronics, one of Apple’s key manufacturing partners in India.

The leak contained at least six files identifying companies supplying specific components for the iPhone 18 Pro, including chips, battery parts and camera modules. The documents reportedly map hundreds of parts used in the upcoming device, information that Apple does not publicly disclose in its supplier database.

Some of the leaked documents allegedly carried Apple’s confidential markings and internal code names linked to the iPhone 18 Pro programme. They also included photographs said to show the handset undergoing drop tests at a Tata facility earlier this year.

The breach is seen as a significant concern because it could reveal sensitive details about Apple’s closely guarded global supply chain and manufacturing strategy. It may also expose the company’s reliance on particular suppliers and provide competitors or counterfeiters with information that Apple typically keeps confidential.
