Some things are well above a game of football.

Atletico Madrid have released an emotional tribute video in memory of Diogo Jota ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

The Portuguese forward, who played for both clubs during his career, tragically died in a car accident alongside his brother earlier this summer.

The video, titled “Always in our hearts, Diogo Jota”, highlights touching tributes from Anfield and from his hometown in Portugal, where fans and communities continue to grieve.

The video is only the beginning of a wider joint tribute planned between Atletico and Liverpool for their meeting in England.

According to reports, it was Atletico who first approached Liverpool with the idea of honouring their former player together. UEFA’s approval may still be required, but both clubs are determined to ensure the occasion reflects Jota’s influence on and off the pitch.

Tributes Beyond Madrid and Liverpool

This is not the first time Atletico have remembered Jota. In August, they joined FC Porto in a moving tribute during a pre-season friendly at the Estádio do Dragão.

On that occasion, fans from both sides stood together in remembrance of a fallen star talent.

Whose atletico Madrid Chapter

Although Jota never made a senior appearance under Diego Simeone, his 2016 move to Atletico was a turning point in his career. Signed from Paços de Ferreira for €7.2 million, he was immediately loaned to Porto, where he thrived during the 2016/17 campaign.

A year later, Jota was sent on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers, then in England’s Championship. His energy, finishing, and intelligence made him a decisive figure in Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League. The Midlands club made his transfer permanent for around €14 million — a move that proved transformative for both the player and the team.

Rising to the Top at Liverpool

In 2020, Liverpool signed Jota in a deal worth up to £45 million. At Anfield, he quickly established himself as a key member of Jürgen Klopp’s attacking line, offering versatility across the front three and scoring vital goals in both domestic and European competitions.

By the time of his untimely passing, Jota had cemented his reputation as one of Portugal’s finest forwards of his generation.
