Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal has expressed confidence that the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha and party MP, Rahul Gandhi, will become the Prime Minister in 2029.

Speaking to Hindustan TimesVenugopal hit back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark that Rahul Gandhi could become Prime Minister “only in a mock Parliament”, stating that the political battle was not about capturing the top post but about “restoring democracy” in the country.

While he acknowledged that the fight does not revolve around the idea of becoming part of the government, he asserted that Rahul Gandhi will become the Prime Minister in 2029.

“Amit Shah, wait for some time. Take it from us –– Rahul Gandhi will become the Prime Minister of India. What will happen to Shah and Modi is something they should think about. You wait for 2029. The people of India want Gandhi to become Prime Minister, but his fight is not about becoming Prime Minister”, he told Hindustan Times.

Venugopal said that the INDIA bloc does not intend to merely become part of the government. “Our primary fight is to restore democracy in this country, restore the voting rights of ordinary people and uphold the Constitution”.

His remarks come days after INDIA bloc’s massive protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan to push for the rollback of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The INDIA bloc parties, including the Congress, have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in what they describe as “vote theft” and alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

On INDIA Bloc’s Next Move

KC Venugopal said that the Congress party was consistently in touch with its alliance partners, adding that the party would intensify its campaign across states while continuing its protests at the national level.

“When we call for an agitation, people from all walks of life join us, beyond party workers, and INDIA bloc leaders”, he said.

“We will spread it to the state level while continuing the campaign at the Centre”, said the Congress leader, adding that the opposition bloc was also preparing to raise the issue during the upcoming session of the Parliament.
