Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Monday condemned the violent scenes that unfolded during Monday’s pro-Palestinian demonstrations across Italy, saying the actions of some protesters have “nothing to do with solidarity”.
In a post on X, Meloni expressed outrage over clashes at Milan’s central train station, where protesters allegedly threw objects and smashed windows, prompting police to respond with tear gas.
“Outrageous images coming from Milan,” Meloni wrote. “Self-proclaimed ‘pro-Pal’ individuals, self-proclaimed ‘antifa’ members, self-proclaimed ‘pacifists’ who wreak havoc on the train station and provoke clashes with Law Enforcement,” the Italian PM wrote.
The images that come from Milan are unworthy: self-styled “pro-Pal”, self-styled “antifa”, self-styled “pacifists” who devastate the station and generate clashes with the law enforcement agencies. Meloni further noted that, “Violence and destruction that have nothing to do with solidarity and that will not change a single thing in the lives of people in Gaza.”
She added that it is Italian citizens who will ultimately suffer the consequences, as they “end up paying for the damages caused by these thugs.”
Meloni also voiced support for law enforcement officers “forced to endure the bullying and gratuitous violence of these pseudo-protesters”, and urged organisers and political forces to clearly condemn the unrest.
“I hope for clear words of condemnation from the organizers of the strike and from all political forces,” she concluded.
Mass Pro-Palestinian Protests Erupt Across Italy
The protests on Monday were part of a nationwide day of action aimed at denouncing what demonstrators described as “genocide in Gaza”. Tens of thousands took to the streets in cities including Rome, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Naples and Palermo. In Genoa and Livorno, dock workers blockaded ports, while in Bologna, demonstrators briefly shut down a motorway before being dispersed by water cannons.
In Rome, around 20,000 people gathered near Termini station, many waving Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine!”. A large banner at the front of the march read: “Against Genocide. Let’s block everything.”
The protests coincided with mounting international pressure over the war in Gaza. On the same day, several countries prepared to formally recognise Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, following announcements from the UK, Canada and Australia.
However, Meloni’s government has refused to follow suit. While it has condemned Israel’s continued military offensive in Gaza and insisted no Italian arms have been sold to Israel since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, it has also rejected immediate recognition of a Palestinian state and voiced opposition to EU trade sanctions on Israel.
