Nearly 40 years after the gas leak at Bhopal’s Union Carbide factory killed over 5,000 people and severely affected thousands more, the Madhya Pradesh government’s Gas Relief Department is set to begin disposing of 350 metric tonnes of toxic waste from the Union Carbide factory. The waste will be disposed of at the Treatment Storage Disposal Facility (TSDF) in Pithampur, Indore, for which the central government has allocated ₹126 crore. The process is likely to begin this month. This is 5 per cent of the total toxic waste. However, there are many questions and apprehensions in people’s minds about this campaign.
